Re: sca chain mail idea
LH,
Not sure that is true. I find ring size and density of weave far more important to shock absorption than round or flat.
rotccpt,
LH is right on with the voiders and skirt. Good luck with your new look and the pair of plates will indeed offer more protection.

I have heard recently in Europe some period encampments are not allowing some of the treated canvas due to flammability (sp? Real word?)

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
The biggest issue my team of archers had with this was actually mental. Many had heard arrowloops were not for bows and this had a negative impact on them. So we started with poles spaces some 6-4" and simply went in closer and closer until they could constantly shoot between the posts. I think most...

That does seem to be the answer to the question is stand behind it a fair way. AS well practice. Glad Mike could figure it out. He tends to be a good hands on kinda guy.

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
I suspect it is the roof that is itself short as she also is asking for short pole axes. Hardly would have anything to do with the loops themselves but low ceilings. The gun loops sounds like the small keyhole style ones and it may be largely because they are so close to the ground from what I am re...

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
If it is Caernarfon castle he did it at I can see the questions. There are some rather unusual loops there. I am not sure there any others like it and the fact they are discontinued with later Edwardian castles likely is telling. I have not seen the video but just because Mike could not figure it ou...

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
Sean, I am sure shooting from between and over merlons was part of the game as well. But here is the thing to keep in mind. Usually castle garrisons were small. When you look at the lists of men and equipment they often have far more bows and crossbows than archers and crossbowmen. I suspect men at ...

still cheaper than brass from what I have seen.... not sure what the heck happened but you almost need a loan now to get a good sized sheet of brass. Only a decade ago I could get a sheet for 1/3 of what it is now.

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
Chef, Lets go back for a moment to the initial question. You were stating the loops would not work for archers mechanically using a warbow. I can prove that many could and have done so. So lets put that silly idea to rest first off. This is just another myth, light thinner plate because of heat trea...

Re: Dimensions of an arrow loops in a crenelation?
I do not think that is true Chef. In fact I think crossbows and handguns were not even used quite that way. Many loops likely had the archer a ways back from the opening. In this manner unless you were in a room with a low roof the warbow would have plenty of space to be used. I actually had plans t...

Kon,
That is rather circular arguments there as to why not. The truth is I suspect they did and the art proves to some degree well past the navel. I think the real question is to what degree and how. I am sure many never did but I think this one may be simply tradition lingering on.

Ushumgal,
Will have to look that up. Sounds interesting. I'd like to see evidence of that as my understanding is that lamellar was largely a Chinese item early on and a bit later than this period.

Not sure what to say. De Abernoun for example is nearly straight across the bottom. No idea how it could miss but covering the hips. Kon, I could not have said it better. I'd for sure go the aketon and pair of plates route over the super long idea. For horizontal ones I do 2-3" width usually with about 1/2" of overlap.

MJ,
Since that is how most reenactors do this with medieval art over anything else to form their ideas on the period why should that be a big surprise in this case? They use what is around them and familiar.

Re: Chest Protection for nursing mom
That is a hard one as from what I gather those areas do become tender due to the process going on and constant flux. I'd start with what Rodney is thinking. Maybe something more rigid that takes more of the sting out or alternatively padding, perhaps both?

So they compact up and down when put on the ground. Simply put them compacted down then put the next ones on the ground next to them so the C's are basically inside each other.

Re: CoP styles
With the vertical ones you get to a point they just cannot go down past a point or if your bend too far or sit you are half the man you used to be. So I think we can assume they did not descend past that point but I guess one cannot be sure. Not sure what you mean referring to the Kussnacht plates. ...

Ernst,
I suspect those do very much cover the lower abdomen. I still am not sure on how the vertical ones work. I find that you can get a few inches past the navel at the front but it is sort of a D shape facing down, gets higher over the hips and down lower at the front.
ED,
Nice example!

Eltz, Not sure I think that is true 100%. I think it depends. I'd say most do not cover the hips. I think several of them do for sure in the front and later even sides go past the natural waist. I am not sure that is true Steve. Many types of the wisby ones go down past the navel and if you look at mid 14th century art most of them seem to go down past the navel lower on the abdomen.
