For a low level knight think mail, lots of mail, maybe some polyrns and a great helm.

Kit, The armour has turned out very nice. Good job. I have days when I do not want to go out to work either. IT usually happens when a good game is on (it has usually to be a very, very good game to over come the armour) or I am working on a half dozen or dozen helmets that are on dead line, nothing...

Bruno, I love that helmet! I have contemplated making one at one time for myself but went for an earlier german sallet. Someday.... Anyhow if I were to make that I would likely start something of a barbute like top just w/out the front guard that covers the face and the tail. As far as the face it l...

I am with Chef I think the face looks wrong. Thomas, If you are ever in York let me know and I can show you what later people repairing armour can do. We have a set of pauldrons and someone put the lames on backwards on one, very funny.... who could wear that? Someone with two right arms perhaps. RPM

I am looking for one of those wise romanish people on the board. I have made a number of the segmented roman armour and always have cleaned them up on the outside and called it good. Do we =really have any idea if they were really cleaned 'bright' or were they left black from the forge? The reason I...

THomas, I had such a funny time to get the right thickness. I was asked for MM, decimal inch and gauge and once I got it both the 1m and 1.5m were actually both wrong, the 1m was 1.5m the 1.5 was 2m. In the end if you can see the metal yourself and gauge it yourself do it. It works better and usuall...

Duco, I wish I would have saved a few of the patterns before it went offline. Well I have plenty of my own and the AA has a pretty nice selection. You can midify most to serve purposes when you are new so it is not too bad. Out of curiousity did he drop the section because too much traffic? I know t...

I wore long sleeves alot in the metal shop but ended up almost loosing a finger due to an accident at one point. Just take things slow and do not rush. If you are working with a drill press or grinder do not wear sleeves that can get caught in it as well. I also tend to stand parallel to things when...

Mark, Thank you for the information. I found it interesting in the Knight and the BLast Furnace it seems that some of the armour successfully treated were not always the ones I would think were for the very wealthy. I could not find the book yesterday, I think the head curator might have had it and ...

Our favorite russian armour website no longer has patterns on it ladies and gents. I went to look at it as I have not for some time know and it has totally been changed. Sorry for the bad news. Konstantine is on this one. There are sales of 1000's, literally, of COP in the last quarter of the 13th. The french king purchased at one time for his navy something like 3,500ish from I beleive brughs and there were even COP guilds in 1250 in Spain (AWilliams KABF). THere are tons, of 13th MSS of ...

Russ, Nope understand 100% self-supporting student as well (my wife supports me a lot as well though). I wish some c...

Atli, I think the general form of the helmet as being possible still a hundred or so years later not too hard to believe. Look at the simple conical top it lasted for a very long time. I think the more generic helmets with a few modifications a good idea. I had a few years straight where everyone an...

If I am not mistaken one way how they test blunt trama from handguns if with some type of balistic clay. I think it should work on similar ways with arrows and bolts etc. I think this has been a great post as it has really brought out alot of really good points on medieval balistic testing. Russ, Ar...

Cotasmalla, Funny the reason I was saying what I said was that it seemed you were coming off 'superior' but either way I am glad it was fun. Anyone can be wrong or error in testing, the good ones are the ones who can realize that and more on correcting the error. Also I am fairly sure in their tests...

Russ, Thanks for the view shift Russ. Is there any evidence for hardened mail? I have never heard this was a big practice. If the shirt of mail was hardened and the tip not that would help. Also were not the heads used on mail specifically the really long bodkins not the shorted thicker anit-plate o...

cotasmalla, My point was if the other tests that were done had a different result you may want to look into why. (By the way I think you saying your mail was better is a fairly poor and illogical comment considering these people are in the top of their field. I think personally it has to do with ver...

I think we also are missing the point that just because the mail and aketon/gembeson/fabric defense/whatever stops the arrow if over a vital area you could a. be killed instantly if per se over the heart with enough force or b. have major damage to internal organs= dying later from said injuries. I ...

An iselman and Norseman still were a fairly close group until the time the chesspieces were made from what I can tell. I think the iselmen may have more british influence but were still rather isolated from the mainland so I think a strong norse influneced isleman would be similar to a norse kit any...

I think you have to main things to look at both deal with relitivity of what he is trying to get across. Thomas, Thanks for the links. I was looking at the clarke one but it looks like it would be hard to use for curves and unfortunatly that is something I am really looking for. Let me know if I am wrong in this assumption, it looks very similar to one I worked with in the metal shop I was in. As to th...
