This effigy is likely much later but we do see solid breastplates in the 1350s. What are you looking for. Perhaps we can help.

So both rather different in application to their respective gauntlets. I had figured that was one advantage of the gothic gaunts was the knuckle plate allowing more movement.

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item

So do you think they are a type of washer? I have been looking into this topic for the 14th century and really have doubts about many notions circling around our communities of reenactors. I have to admit later 15th I would need to do far more looking to feel as comfortable but I know of some Italia...

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item

Tom, Is that really true for the 15th century? I have not looked at this aspect of them in great detail though so I really am not sure one way or the other. Might have to take a look at that. All I can say is the assumption on hourglass gaunts seems overly optimistic to those I have seen. And that t...

Not sure I'd say very common as most of the hourglass guants that remain lack it but it is on enough of them we can say it was in use.

Folcric, YES! I love that one as well. I hope to make something like that in the near future. I made the pattern pieces but I have to set them up again and tape them together to see if the mock up works. Thinking of doing mine with two layers of canvas with a red velvet covering. Also thinking of do...

Mac, I have heard that is the way to go from others as well. Usually I just try doing local work to be allowed fittings. As I tried to make greaves for myself it became clear that doing the back was going to be near impossible just trying to see the back of my leg as it was not always possible. And ...

Keegan, A vice! Never thought of that. Though I work outside without a bench so that might be why. I tend to hammer it to shape over a 2.5" steel bar to 'twist' them. Icepocca, I think Macs comments about the variety is an interesting one. Look at people walk and you can see a huge variety in how fa...

Not sure I like the term round for these. Rounded is better. None of the ones I have handled or seen are truly round. Re: later 14th century plate cuisses

I am indeed in some ways conflicted. I have no problem with the idea of full cuisses itself. It seems a logical and supported by enough evidence to seem pretty solid. How common and the specifics of them is where I have my greatest concerns. To a certain degree I am distrustful of art especially whe...

Tom, Interesting that is an Italian one. I am noticing that in art there is indeed far more than I had assumed. That said still odd how we have a fair mix in art of full cuisses and partial cuisses but nothing from remains. Here are the best ones I found. http://manuscriptminiatures.com/media/manusc...

Mac,

You can sort of get the angle at the back as it looks like the center back there survived. Must have given them something of an idea of the angle. Couldn't be a sharp angled backpoint or the back would be the wrong angle.

So would half plate then be a good in between. That might be one reason why there are so many remaining of this nature and no full plate ones. I have never ridden with full cuisses so I cannot say for sure.

Sean, That is undoubtedly true. The issue is keeping fidelity. It is only a hop, skip and jump to fantasy in many respects in reenactment. A good point though. It is interesting. I was looking for decoration on greaves and seriously there was not much I came across. It is always neat to see new things. I wonder if these have hinges on them under the leather or if the leather acts as the hinge?
