Re: later 14th century plate cuisses
Yes you see it in manuscripts as well but not only for the English but all over. I guess my question is increasingly.... in art it usually is all done one way, all with the rear covering cuisse plate or not. Why do we see in general a wide number of cuisses (granted not English) but none have anythi...

Re: later 14th century plate cuisses
James,
There are some cuisses from this period but as far as armour made for English client or in England, true not sure I can think of any that are for sure from there.

Re: later 14th century plate cuisses
Mac, I looked through all the imagines I have from the RA from 14th and 15th and none have anything besides a half or 1/3 rear plate for the cuisses. Many only have the small single or double plate on the outside of the cuisses. If I have time I will try finding some good photos of this but there ar...

Re: later 14th century plate cuisses
Mac, That was sort of my thoughts on art as well from art. What about the physical remains? As I am looking at the cuisses from the period it also seems full cuisses are not as well represented either. A very interesting thing trying to figure out how common such items were. I think I will go ahead ...

later 14th century plate cuisses
So I am looking over English art to get a feeling on the back plates on cuisses. My main focus was seeing how many had any, how many had partial rear/back plates and how many would have full back plates. I am leaning toward half plates from the art I am seeing it seems a valid choice but many do see...

Re: 14th Century Splinted Leather Armor Question
Plenty of art shows either case was done as well as both inside and outside, at least by my estimation.
The two surviving vambraces all have splints on the outside but very thin and places one next to the other.

Mac,
But how often do they really show up in art? Could this not correlate to how often they come up in text? I think the other collar type neck defenses seem far more common from what I am seeing.

We got one. It works very well. I have to say so far we've sewn two tents and who knows how many other items and it works great and I'd get one again if this thing did not look like it will last two of three lifetimes.

Re: Article on THE BRIGANDINE FROM THE POLISH ARMY MUSEUM
I was going to guess mid 16th but 3rd is likely more accurate. Mac, It reminds me of some of the odd dots and such I have seen on armours that likely tie to assembly. It could be on the other side of these plates are some coding system. Just a possible way to organize it. Either way sounds like much...

Sean, That is ok. Seemed there was some question on comitis and its meaning. Neat they have all these online now. Re: Was maille cleaned using sand and vinegar?
Sean, There is not a Duke of Lancaster in the 13th century. It is first created by Ed III for his friend Henry Grosmont, the Earl of Lancaster. It was 1351. I think we are pretty safe with the term Earl here. Will, Fantastic experiment. I will have to try some of them sometime. Will have to wait for...

Agreed. Seems recently cotton has been assumed to be less common but not sure why. Much of what I have seen is either plant material or some nature including cotton inside textile/padding.

Mac,
I think that the term changes. Standards show up all the time through the mid to late 15th in inventories all over. It also may be that in some places I am less familiar pizanes remain in use, like Italy, in this period.

Is this from his Edward III and the Victory of England or something like that? Does he really indicate they chained the wagons together in front of the battles?

And the fact that factually the rebuttal asserts incorrect historic evidence. They both seems to have an odd concept that missed that archery is not one culture but many.

Re: Article on THE BRIGANDINE FROM THE POLISH ARMY MUSEUM
An interesting thought Mac. Most of the brigs I have seen that are original 15th seemed to have a very similar shape to other torso defenses of the period in proportion, though I only got to see a few in person inside and outside. It was interesting to see the really long torso defenses of the later...

Sure. Just depends on the use and user. We have people who have worn the liners in rebated and such for years and been fine. I did as well, still use that helmet and liner at times. I have played around with a liner that has reinforced padding in select spaces but it still is in its infancy. Having ...

With the one having a large solid backplate would be a neat early date for these armours but as it is likely singular from what I am seeing in art makes me wonder a bit. Neat article though. Some more thinking to do for sure before I make my late 14th harness.

I have found most liners I have seen have been plant material as well. I suspect they used a number of materials. ONe I looked at seemed to be very raw cotton. Even had little pod bits in it. I use cotton more or less for this. Helmet liners get a mix of more compressed and somewhat more fluffy laye...
