Re: Beverly Shear vs Bandsaw
Chris, I was using a small one and it walked the table it was on. Though I did suspect at the time the setup for it was wrong for metal and the speed being too high may have been the issue but it was nothing like the larger commercial bandsaw the shop I worked at had so not something I was very fami...

Plus 100 to Thomas. I honestly could not handle the noise... and even when clamped down I had a great deal of jumping, though I could have been doing it wrong I guess.

Re: Double Bell Wedge tent
I'd make them in two parts myself and add rope around the bottom of the one and hooks on the other. Allows for easier tie downs at the mid section and taking down and putting up as well as sewing.

Re: time frame for a helm?
Conal, I am not saying disposable people those are your words not mine. But there is a dig difference between disposable and 30 plus years of use as is even in the medieval period. Depends who you were and what it was is my point. There is a fair amount of evidence for people buying and selling used...

I'd look here. http://home.adelphi.edu/~sbloch/sca/tents/kuijt.article/ Basically a double bell is just one of these with trapezoids fit in between them. We have made a few tents. I'd get really good quality canvas to start with. As well get good hard wood fort he center pole. Anything else will swa...

Destichado, You need to go back and reread my comment I was simply adding to your comment but largely in support of it. Nothing I said states I think things were not durable even remotely. And yes I have indeed spent years thinking about this very phenomena. But the issue is that not all things work...

Re: time frame for a helm?
Destichado, That I think is true but I think of it more like a spectrum. You have the start date when it is rare but starting its ascent, date in which it is a common item where it is at its largest dissemination and its late/end date when it is declining or simply gone. Yes there are bits that go w...

Andrew, It would be nice if we had some remaining examples of these split backplates with faulds as I suspect the rear plates were split as well and hinges seem like the way I'd go for the side juncture. Keep me posted on what you find the the back plates themselves. I look forward to seeing the one...

Not to sidetrack this but how do the faulds really work with the back opening cuirass like these?
I think I have always thought like BA. The flat tops seem to be around the time of the rise of the gorget.

Re: Great helm + bascinet question
MJ,
That is crazy. You have several examples of bascinets under great helms and other similar helmets.

I think the issue is people want it to be an all or nothing thing when very few things then were.

Re: A new look at an old friend.
Mac, I think the one shoulder is indeed higher than the other which would likely account for the difference between what we are seeing right to left arm/shoulder. The other question I have is if we can assume they were all made in one fashion. I have not seen Doug's book yet but I would very much as...

Finally got to watch the rest of the presentation. Wonderfully done! Wish I had been there.
I like the conclusion with his comparison to the warrior saints. Is there a St. Tobias that was a warrior-saint?

Charles, "Well, I have – I’m fairly well informed about the Roman material…. Clearly inspired by the Persian material." I think this is basically it. I have no doubt Persian and other groups influenced Swedish, Roman, AS and other groups. This is how everything works basically in an overly simplifie...

Charles, The best I can think of is his book simply titled, Sutton Hoo. He literally wrote the book on it, or one of them. 'Hitting the nail on the head here. Again, Evans focuses on the differences with the Swedish material but fails utterly to state what similarities it has with known Anglo Saxon ...

Ben,
If you need some help let me know. As far as pieces go the torso parts have a higher neck than throat opening and the arm is made widest at the back where the elbow is. Is that what your asking?

Charles, We know a number of migrants were moving in so I think it highly likely artisans made the move as it is unlikely just warriors and farmers were moving in without them, especially kings. And if the king could spare no expense it seems likely he could also have had his own skilled artisans. H...

Charles,
Why would we assume that? Could it not be tradesmen from that area who immigrated to England or a transmission of that style to craftsmen in other areas such as England? I will not argue it could not be possible for it to have been imported but what evidence do we have for this really?
