Re: FS: flat riveted haubergon.
It indeed looks very nice. I should have Dan take a look as this. For sure it is better than almost all the flat linked mail I have seen. Sadly that is well outside my budget but it looks like a great mail shirt. Period wise round links are not uncommon so not a big deal to my mind. Best of luck JK!...

Re: OK, let's figure out early 14th century leg harness.
Steve, I think first off we get back to what Wade said. We cannot be sure. We are using something a sculpture created as funeral monuments for something other than it was intended. Sure they may be good ideas but I suspect many lack pretty key details for questions you are asking. As well they show ...

If you pm me I can send you some of the images. Are you looking for German types late 14th bascinets in general? The RA has another center mount one as well I have photos of. I have photos of the loose visor they have as well.

It air will air dry. Just takes some time. I like buttons on mine, cloth ones. Easier to get on and off. Make sure it is all 100% natural and your natural sweating combined with the breathability of the linen will work wonders. Make sure your armour has something on it to protect it from the sweat o...

Re: English chest defenses 1340's and 50's?
Honestly I think most of the Wisby pairs of plates would be perfect on a man-at-arms in the 1340s as I think by 1360 they were likely being worn on villagers as those were what made up the local population. Does not mean they were poor per se but not knightly. Glad to have been of help. Best of luck...

Hey the pair of plates is still a very viable torso defense post 1370, just that those mafia types often prefer sparkly things....

Re: English chest defenses 1340's and 50's?
Henrick, What you see is early on the pair of plates are basically tube shaped. Either vertical plates or horizontal over the abdomen and the upper chest 2-3 chest/lung plates. Later one single one appears like the Hirshstein castle example. Toward 1360 the chest plates are more rounded and shaped b...

Re: English chest defenses 1340's and 50's?
Henrik, I think you see exactly where you need to be headed. This is one of the key weaknesses of only basing research on art. It lacks a more full perspective. Take a look at Claude Blair's European arms and armour and he covers this very clearly. Basically the pair of plates shows up in the 13th c...

I think bob has it. These were indeed secret affairs and so rather scare info remains. Re: Metal gauge for Wisby COP
I have a list of pair of plate thicknesses from a number of sources. Some are around .75mm toward 2mm. Just depends I wish I had access to one of the better preserved ones so I could see if they varied in a way where one could tell it was intentional to a specific place.

What is the radius of the curve you give them? Pulling them in may help as long as it does not cause the plate upon impact into you.

Ernst, Indeed. I was thinking when I read Thom's PhD that very self same thing. Steve, Do you overlap the plates? I have had some issues with wearing and simply patched it as needed but it sounds like yours are wearing faster than I am used to. I tend to use a thick metal plate between the plates to...

Re: Metal gauge for Wisby COP
As from Thom's PhD one can see they were a mixed bag. For many years the best source was the Italian pair of plates that still has its fabric cover. The Wisby ones are tricky as He never gives more detail on how they knew it was leather which bothers me. Is it actually leather fragments? Imprints of...

Mine does. Far more than the leather ones I used to make. Leather can last longer from what I have seen but I always double layer heavy canvas and some have lasted years of use. I tend to use a sanding when on the angle grinder on the edges and then sanding sponges and they get super smooth. I have ...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?
In the end I think the issue is having the skeletal crew does not make it safe. I suspect as well that some captains would be unwilling to go too low and merchants would be aware that being under crewed could lead to loss of merchandise. Seeing as how many ships in English ports were owned by Mercha...

That is true in many ways. Most places do indeed have many, many items in the back. I often do my best to get into those areas and see what is behind the curtain so to speak. Many times in more art centered museums unless the piece of armour or the weapon is aesthetically pleasing it is never going ...

Re: Pretty Neat Re-Find!
I have always had a mixed view on this and... it goes back to money. Honestly people often have very unrealistic ideas on how funding works because we all hear of insane ideas of what the gov spends money on. Museums are often funded for specific things with specific funds. So I can see some control...
