Re: Pretty Neat Re-Find!

Yes but that public money likely would not cover the huge amount to make safe and accommodating cases for the arms and armour. That is the issue. I am not economic historian but sometimes I do feel that every single theme seems to end there.

Re: Pretty Neat Re-Find!

To me the real answer is finding a way to make something more like what every person here expects a museum to be. Something that has access to the objects there (To a degree). The issue is I see many private collectors as not wanting to really promote the items they have either. There were several i...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

Chef, I am sure that is true. You have to pay more for the crew. That said there is a operating standard and skeletal crew which is good enough.... at times. No doubt Ed II has high expectations. He did so in most thing and no doubt led to his removal from office. Which horribly expensive book is th...

"Obviously, armor and weapons are NOT trash, but still, SELL IT! It should be painfully obvious that private collectors are willing to spend billions to appreciate things that nobody else really wants. Why not stop treating them as criminals (unless they ARE, of course!) and let them finance your fu...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

Nope. None are royal ships. These are expectations on English ships in general. Just Edward II micromanaging. He starts to stipulate what it means to be fully crewed so to speak. Just because you can get by with fewer men does not mean people, perhaps Ed II, thought it was the best way for them to r...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

Ernst, (I should note that getting out of a mail haubergeon is much faster than getting out of a pair of plates -- something which might have been a consideration on a sinking vessel.) Really? I could cut laces off in seconds. And if it has buckles even easier. I am hesitant to follow the mail for l...

'Coats of plates often don't have them. Like many torso defenses, they primarily focus on the upper torso. Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

Chef,

Yes but we know he sold the boats and most of the stuff on them so I suspect he had more there. It is listed as the remains of the ships in the will. But yes that could bee depending ont he ships. Soton tends to have fairly large ships for trade though as well by this point.

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

In my earlier post I put up how c. 1300 ships may have been equipped so I will not repeat it but here are some more. I have a fairly large collection but some interesting accounts. In 1322 Soton took these off of some ships that were in harbor. 'pairs of plates, bascinets, collarets, gauntlets, cuis...

Ckanite , Still no heraldry so not a knight as all the knights in the MS seem to be fairly well Id'd so I'd still say footman but likely better equipped or wealthier so yes. I would say mostly but not always. Very few things in life are always. AS well I suspect it was not just a one off guy as well. That said I think most had open helmets. My feeling is it was economically based. Here is a bunch of footmen trying to beat up a knight with clubs. Front guy has a visor. h...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

I do not want to discount the art but every ship inventory I have seen that is in-depth includes weapons, most armour as well. I am working on a paper on Soton and piracy and if it is an indication of other English ports (Which for those in the Cinque ports and such it likely is) few ships would hav...

Re: Arming and clothing a European pirate late 14th century?

Sailors did have to fight. In fact I suspect the sailors would have played a big part of battles like Sluys as there is no place for them to withdraw to. In England it is very common to see ships that are merchant vessels being fairly well armed due to largely pirates but pirates may not be what you...

I have wanted to do some Japanese armour for some time. Neat work as well. Some of the people on this forum are very good at helping to improve our game so it is a good place to come to progress.

Where did you come across your name? I played a card game with a character by that name.

Wade, I think that depends on the person and the items. There are loads of items that are gone into private collections that I suspect will be 'lost' so to speak until the owner dies or goes broke. For the most part I have had good luck with most collections in gaining access to see them. I think mo...

So I am working on a kettle helmet for a friend. Time frame last quarter of the 14th century. Nobleman. worldantiques,

There is one very fine weave hauberk or haubergeon at the Wallace. I had some online photos of it. Might not be this fine but when I saw it the mail was amazing. The RA has another with very closely woven links but the wire itself was much finer.

'The inner diameter of an individual link doesn't matter as much as the size of the gaps in the weave. The gaps in decent mail are effectively zero. The MET has a video showing that they can't stick a pin through it.' The problem with this comment is the assumption of what 'decent' mail really is. F...
