Re: 1st half of 15th Century Gorget
If I had someone around who knew how to do this sort of thing I would attempt this but it is at the time being outside my ability. That said my friend will be glad to know it is possible. Mac, So basically yes for the bascinet with the gorget collar but without the lower face plate. That works. Can ...

Re: 1st half of 15th Century Gorget
Wade, I know that is my problem. I look at some and go that really looks like the one or the other. The edge all the way around the bascinet sort of bothers me as a it keeps doubt in my mind about it being separate item over integral. My questions tend to look at 'why do that' if you are going to ha...

Re: 1st half of 15th Century Gorget
Mac, I guess my question is are we really seeing the lower plate of a integral or attached throat defense on these bascinets or is there something else we are seeing at times. I know some artists and reenactors have interpreted these as separate collar like items and others integral attachments to g...

Ok. I can see that. But why do all of them have a front edge if they are integral and many great bascinets seem to be out of one piece?

1st half of 15th Century Gorget
So I have a friend who is working on an Agincourt era harness and we started speaking about these gorgets you see on effigies from the 1410s onwards through much of the 1st half of the 15th century. Like these- http://effigiesandbrasses.com/2067/1990/ http://effigiesandbrasses.com/1780/2388/ I'd lov...

Mac, " I think that a lot of the problem we have, as a group, is the absence of a formal system of instruction. Back in the day, we would have learned in a shop full of more experienced craftsmen who would have told us.... "Kid! If you swing a hammer like that yer' gon'a be a cripple by the time yer...

Pal,
The issue is largely regarding testing with it.
There are all sorts of things one could focus on. Yet mail varies in period greatly so generalizations become very common.

Re: De-scaling forge blackened stuff
So if I use the vinegar can I just rinse it off with water and be done with it? If I use the stronger cleaning vinegar is there anything I should be aware of?
Kon,
I might do this if the vinegar one does not do what I'd like it to.
Thanks Gents!

De-scaling forge blackened stuff
I know some people have mentioned various types of solutions they make to de-scale the forge scale that metal gets in the forge. What do you use. I'd like to get away from some of the harder chemicals if I can. I know in the past people have mentioned some rather household items but would love to he...

Ernst,
And to make matters more complex you have the fact that some great helms and early bascinets look strangely similar.
Some great images.
From a functional side I can see flat tops working with visors as well.

Kon, Pot helm is a terrible term. It is used loosely through the entire late medieval into early modern period for an assortment of helmets. If you do not like early great helm or proto great helm best of simply call it a helm.... Ernst, Has it to me. I doubt much use of this before 1200 except by t...

I'd love to just figure out that part of armour making from a person like you. I tend to spend far more time making plans and patterns than hammering nowadays but I am sure I am doing many thing incorrectly or at best inefficiently.
