Re: crossbow bolts and longbow arrows against armor
MA, I see what you are saying now. Thanks. Dan, For sure. I think the under garment always should be in the equation. We have this saving men's life against all sorts of weapons like the du Guesclin account where his pair of plates and hauberk are penetrated by a lance but his aketon saves him. But ...

Looks good. I found that the cut outs on splinted armour really makes a big difference.
I wish we had more info on period attachment though. Having things pointed and such makes a big difference but I'd like to get as period on it as I can.

Dan,
I can see that. I think the issue is that the accounts largely are lacking detail to take them either direction with finality.
And I do not have pet theories. Only theories. No pets allowed where I am.

Re: crossbow bolts and longbow arrows against armor
"Here, Diaz makes a specific distinction between pierce and injure. "As for their archers, the missiles lay like corn on the threshing floor; all of them barbed and fire-hardened which would pierce any armour and would reach the vitals where there is no protection..." The obvious implication is that...

A quick question for you coin makers,
So you have a top od the facing side and a top on the reverse face. Do the tops of the sides line up top to top on period coins. Honestly I do not have any and I never looked at this when I was able to handle period coins in the past.
Any ideas?

MA,
Explain that for me as it is not making sense. That does not seem to make sense with penetration. Glancing surfaces and angles yes but these would be similar to larger parts but thinner. The best I can imagine is that they are smaller targets.

Alone, not likely from what I have seen in art and text. I wonder if it is possible they wore plate and mail in combination. Seems a bit late for that still.

Cliff, Oh I totally mixed that up. I thought you were saying the armour was as good as rotten apples, soft and easy to puncture. Very interesting indeed. I bet doing testing with rotten apples would be much safer and easier than with arrows but messy for sure. Interesting comparison the author makes...

Re: crossbow bolts and longbow arrows against armor
It is interesting that both sides seem to have had men in armour killed by projectiles. Very much like many other battles where the archery duel starts off the fight. I have always suspected crossbows would be better at that than bows. Neat find. Have you ever gotten your list of these examples Clif...

Graham,
I think they likely used leather or fabric to avoid the binding you are speaking of. I have seen some that look like there is something there.
That said I am sure there were many systems in place as they are just figuring this all out at this point.

So I would like to make arrowheads and some spear/javelin heads. I found some stake mandrels but I cannot drop hundreds on something so specific in use right now. So any ideas on what to use or how to make one? Could I use some type of center punch welded to something?
Ideas?

They are simply mercs running during the hundred years war. They come from all over Europe but many were soldiers who once their contract ended simply turned to free booting.
