Why are you trying to keep the weight down on a helmet for SCA combat? The wieght is a good portion of the protection. Light helmets are a bad thing. You'll get your head and neck torqued around every time you get hit.

The biggest problem I see is that the splints will tend to bend when they get hit, much easier than a dished cop. My suggestion would be to either hide a cop under your sleeve or extend the splints straight back and put the cop inside them.

Brief reminder... The original intent was for the guy winning the tournament to crown his lady "Queen of Love and Beauty." The SCA got around to having Kings and Queens actually reign a little later. My 2 cents on the issue ofthe belt... To make a pattern to fit you, use duct tape and an old, long t-shirt. That helt sitts on your hips, not up towards your waste. Put the t-shirt on, tape it tightly over your hips. (What amkes the belt work is it sitting on the swell of your hips so it can't slide...

Some interesting stuff in the pictures, but I'd question any armorer who's entire instructions on measuring for a helmet are "Measure the circumference of your head." There is no way to make a helmet to fit right with just that measurement.

If you hunt around online you can find companies that do swim goggles in polycarbonate with corrective lenses. Those sit closer to your face, so they might work better. Might have to drill a couple small holes inthe bottom to let sweat drain out, though.

Yep. Way too short. One option would be to get some card stock and play with extending the bottom of the helm. What would you want for a 12 ga stainless top?

I think if you measure your 12 ga with a wheel guage you'll find that it's really 13. Everything I can buy here that is sold as 12 is 13 or thinner (some is actually 14).

Ok. I got a reply from the SEM. The final thickness has to come up to spec. So, if you start with 16 gauge (.0625 inch) and dish it, it's going to come out too thin. The spun dome comment actually supoprts this as it requires the heavier metal because forming thins it. If anyone has a question about...

The real problem I see with his 16 gauge helms is that it's 16 gauge before it is formed. When you get done the center of the panels is going to be 18 gauge or less. I have emailed the Society Earl Marshal to see if the intent of the rules is the thickness before or after construction.
