It looks like there are the 4 "bolts" showing on the face which hold the straps. If you look, they show up on the kits, too. As to center grip kites, many of the kits are shown with teh arm through the straps. I haven't looked at all teh pics (yet) so I don't know how many might show them being grip...

There is a template for one in the SCA Fighter's Handbook. It might need some tweaking for current standards and various Kingdom standards. It is also available here http://www.tssinc.net/~daniel/gauge.html .
