What I'e always been told is shoulder to shoulder (or just a touch wider) and short enough to straddle. Seems to work pretty well for the people I know who use them.

It looks like there are the 4 "bolts" showing on the face which hold the straps. If you look, they show up on the kits, too. As to center grip kites, many of the kits are shown with teh arm through the straps. I haven't looked at all teh pics (yet) so I don't know how many might show them being grip...

I have the book. Unfortunately, the drawing is not of a period item like mnost of them. It is a redrawing similar to the stuff in the Osprey books and the detail stinks.

I just made a sword with the Anshelm quillions. They are very nice. THe pommel is way to heavy though. I don't want the balance point right at the quillions and it was going to be less than 2 inches out with the pommel on there.

Note the depth of the original. The Trapp book lists the measurements for the opriginal. You could easily get a fist between the deepest part fo the dish and your body. There is a template for one in the SCA Fighter's Handbook. It might need some tweaking for current standards and various Kingdom standards. It is also available here http://www.tssinc.net/~daniel/gauge.html .

Hmmm... I have a lot of books. However, my favorites are the Churburg books and the Laking reprint. Both are extremely expensive, however.

I would guess that your range of motion problem with the elbows is at least in a good part due ot the cops being too shallow. That's a common problem with SCA arm hanress in general.
