Not a lot of vendors making roman sca helms. Knotwolf does some really nice ones, but I have no idea what he charges for them. m Ironmonger does one in mild steel for $275. Not nearly as pretty as the ones from knotwolf. m Sir Andres from here on the archive might be able to do a lower cost helm in ...

SCA regs on brass rivets on a helm?
I know this has been debated many times before, but I don't remember what the outcome was. I know that 3/16" brass rivets are at least as strong as steel rivets, and I know Windrose has used brass rivets on helms for years. I have an armourer working on a new hat for me. Brass would look cool, ...

Bake it till it's done Seriously, you will know when it comes up to temp, as it will turn dark blue almost instantly. No chemicals required at all. Clean it, put it in the oven, set oven for 550 and wait until the color turns. Turn off oven, remove the piece and let it air cool. Nothing to it at all...

I wouldn't blue it before assembly, it will definetly get scratched up. Assemble it and clean it, then blue it. You might need to remove mill scale from the pieces. One gallon of Muriatic acid mixed with 4 gal. of water in a 5 gallon bucket works great. The acid is $10 at home despot, and the bucket...

If you want an actual dark blue color, rather than a brown or black that you would get from gun (chemical), blueing, you can heat the piece in your home oven at 550 degrees. You will get a nice, deep blue color, with subtle dark purple undertones. The item must be very clean to do this. Oils from yo...

I have a beautiful roman calvary helm from Sir Brand. Got it a couple months ago. It is ridged, has fixed cheeks and a polished finish. Since I started my own helm and finally made up my mind to do a norse persona, I could probably be talked into selling it. It is mild steel 13 and 14 gauge. Let me...

Using oil, going slow and using eye protection, A++ The other tips I have would be to clamp your metal down firmly and support the peice as much as possible. Vibration brakes blades quickly. Apply a decent amount of downward pressure on the saw (helps with the vibration). And most importantly, use b...
