I would be interested. I would also hope Finer is ok with this. There is no reason he shouldn't be. It's not for profit, credits him, and links to his ongoing business. In all ways a win situation for him I would think.

I suggest using the term prototype for these pieces. It basically cuts the required delivery date cr@p out of communication. You never make your money on any of these. (Example: The Dou I am working on after materials costs I'm making approx $.75 [yes that's 75 cents!] an hour but it IS a prototype)...

Arrgh!

Possibly off topic but....... The armour from hell. Every armourer has one of these. An order that continually has problems. Evil- merlin's Dou IS coming along but every step forward, I get a half step back. The maruhimo (round lace) for the suspensory cords FINALLY arrived yesterday. Of course, som...

Aaron, I do all the metalwork at my shop in Thailand. I'm not there often, so I don't take orders often. Most recent completed piece is Gustav's Ogekawa Dou (If you've been playing with Avalon you've probably seen it). A complete dou with kusazuri and kohire is 110,000 yen. A word of advice NEVER of...

Xtracted, While in Tokyo you should visit the national museum at Ueno. It has a very nice armour collection. I can't tell you what to look for because unlike most western museums they rotate exhibits regularly. If I have time I could take you by Kozando as well. Sorry, can't help on the Visa thing.

I can't speak for wages in India. In Thailand minimum wage for labour is 175 baht a day. ( roughly $4 a day) Make it $100 a month (that's what we pay the nanny). In context my wife who has a US MA makes $300 a month teaching at the University. That's after 9 years at said Uni. The costs of businesse...

Actually it's at the junior high where I work, The lining and edging IS silk. It's a very coarse weave kind of crepe I guess. Hyaku yen scraps at the local fabric store. The wool however was NOT cheap. I delivered it to Iwao-san yesterday and he seems quite pleased. Hopefully he'll have pics for me ...

Urushi or laquer is from a plant that is a close cousin of poison ivy. If you're allergic to poison ivy it's going to be a bitch to work with.

China is in the midst of an industrial revolution the likes of which the world has never seen. They are building entirely new industrial cities to entice industries to locate there. Corrius, I probably WOULD have them done that way. I've made them before and there is MUCH less chance of the grills being spaced improperly in a farmed out scenario. The main point on this is getting them made TO SPEC cheaply enough. I've got to have my wife take care of it and she's REALLY busy.

Actually, I think Johannes has the closest to the truth. Most of the full-time armourers are businessmen first, craftsmen second, and artisans third. (This is NOT a bad thing.) Many others are artisans first and therein lies the problem. Good business sense is "Get it there, 1st time, on time, every...
