NOTE: I am NOT defending bad business practices. The idea that "Oh well, he can just sell it to someone else" only floats on generic items. I recently (finally) sold a nice suji kabuto. WAAAY underpriced for the work that went into it. It sat in a box for over a year because the person it was made f...

Perhaps I was unclear. I am not disparaging Zen. I AM disparaging the widespread belief that Kyuudo IS Zen archery. (Much like Effingham and his unceasing efforts to stamp out the bamboo armour myth). People tend to add too much mysticism to zen. At it's heart it's simple. If you type without lookin...

Herrigel is an idiot. There is no Zen to Japanese archery. There are some similar elements but Kyuudo is NOT Zen. Some Zen practitioners use kyuudo as thier koan of choice, but that is no different from staring at a flame or contemplating a question which has no answer. It simply adds a physical ele...

Hmmm, I haven't fought in so long..... Depends on many factors. Is this someone who knows my combos? Someone who covers well on the onside until you make an opening? A lefty? If I am testing someone's reactions, an on-side beginning is pretty much standard. I'm always amazed when an opening series a...

Theo, Unfortunately, it sounds like you' re a small large. (In Ansteorra we have Large Larges). I'm 6' 175lbs and E-Merlin is a tad shorter and roughly the same weight. As it'll be scanned and laser-cut, I could possibly increase the size a bit if you're serious about ordering one. Average build is ...

Ogekawa-dou pre-ordering (cross post)
OK, here's the deal. I am looking at making a number of Ogekawa-dou this vacation (July-August) if there is enough interest. The initial plan is 1mm high carbon steel powder coated in either black or red with silk lacing and steel kohaze (if Trevor has any left, otherwise buffalo horn). IF you are m...

I've been gone for a while but I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Bladerunners (I think)[ Meridian if I remember correctly] and Mountain Confed. Have these groups fallen by the wayside/ changed names? Hanazi (sp) from the East. (Of course the BEST are Ansteorran light cav hunter/seeker units. But I'...

Life is good. There is a special exhibit of Saotome school armours at a museum in the next town. Although most are Early edo I was MOST impressed. 5 complete tosei gusoku and a number of helmets. The lines on one kabuto by Saotome Ienari were VERY similar to the suji I just sold Hoefish. Bowl, fukig...

The order is only 10 years old. Has it really been 10 years? Damn I'm old. Fighting with Sir Syf was one certain way to train to protect your leg, otherwise you PAID. I remember blasting one of her squires in the leg and giving him what for because I KNEW his knight had a better leg shot than I did.

Thanks for the run down JP. Asoph? A serious contender? I love my brother dearly but you DO realize if he makes it to the finals someone might put a shaped charge in his helm, right? Maybe I should come home and light a fire under Rabbit. THAT would be an interesting reign! Is Mahdi not fighting? He...

Lacing source stateside? I THINK there's a link in the other thread to lacesforless. Eff says they're the bomb. Yep that's the downside on these they weigh a ton. The one I just sold hoefish weighed right at 7 kilos. I think the only way to get these down to a reasonable weight is 16 ga. high carbon...

That is the helm I was refering to. Or maybe the original, I understand he's made 2. As you can see it's gorgeous. I would have put a solid shita-jikoro on it myself just to prevent any grousing by overzealous marshals but I DO believe it's safe. ( a TINY nit, it needs wider lacing. The holes are pl...

Yoshida, Do you listen to these "experts" when they tell you japanese armour was made of bamboo? Said person also probably believes cranes were used to lift knights into the saddle. Ignore them. Doesn't matter if it was Joe Newbie, Master Misinformed, or Sir Pompous.Russeting was period (in Europe a...

E-M ogekawa may be a possibility. We'll talk. (I DO have 5 weeks in the shop this summer). Eff, I lucked out. I'm one of those not allergic to Urushi. No great surprise I'm immune to poison ivy too and they're in the same family. I was making a hand braided hemp bowstring and laquered it. I got it a...

BTW the kote are base on a pair of Tsutsu bishomon gote that are held to have belonged to Uesugi Kenshin. He was known for oddball armour. The Suneate are based very much on the ones posted by E-M although they have been lengthened for long Gaijin legs. It's interesting that although Modern Japanese...

I've seen it and it is SWEET! Better than his momonari. Just when I started to get complacent Clang produces THAT! He's definitely putting the pressure on me to up the ante. Having looked the helm over I would not hesitate to recommend Clang to anyone. Especially since other than 5 weeks this summer...

New Japanese armour thread.
First of all I thought the other thread was getting just a hair too long. So I started this one. Pics of Evil-Merlin's new kote and suneate.
