given that stainless is harder the mild you can usually get away with going one gauge lower in stainless then mild, so in my mind 18g stainless is equal to 16 g mild. just my opinion. this is going to soud a little crazy but if you don't care about the material look at a mannequin. They are scary close and all you have to do is cut them apart with a jig saw, add shoulder and side straps.

In my opinion this would make a great fencing gorget. I've always had an issue with gapping in between the top of my gorget and my mask when I tilt my head back, this would definitely solve that problem.
