Re: Hardening for a Coat of Plates
18ga mild is plenty for all but the coat of plates types that have very few plates with the plates being large. That said I'm making a wisby #7 from 19ga 1050 which I'll be heat treating.

Use a flap disk on an angle grinder to grind the weld down. Bench grinders are useless at that sort of thing.
I should take a pic of my 8 inch grinder next to the big one .

Close the gap right tight. Weld it with a lot of little tacks. Its not too difficult it'd you've got your welder set right and you don't let the piece heat up too much.

Oh and wire handles that hang outside the kiln to pick them up with. Don't use less than 16ga though at that heat if you've got a heavy piece three wire will break if its thinner

I've got an apprentice. A pretty one (my fiancee) she just started today but this is probably going to be a project that will get handed to her before too long so a set of 10 will likely get done in the near future regardless of how many orders are in.

Re: heat treating 410- Water, oil, or air quench. Temper or
Haven't tried that but it's definitely not as brittle as 1050 is right out of the water quench. So it's entirely possible it would work but can't say for sure. I've got a pair of black and white gauntlets to heat treat. I'm gonna air quench them but I can toss a test piece in with them and water que...

Re: heat treating 410- Water, oil, or air quench. Temper or
Ok so after tempering tested it out with a cross peen. Doesn't snap till it's been bent back and forth several times and dent resistance of 20ga is about equal to 14ga mild So I'm definitely liking air hardening since it doesn't try to warp so much. On the downside there is more scale to clean off o...

Re: heat treating 410- Water, oil, or air quench. Temper or
Did a test piece air hardened without a temper. It doesn't snap easily. I had to bend it back and forth twice to get it to snap but it's not quite as dent resistant as I'd like it to be. Running the temper at 350 anyway just in case it helps.

Are you guys doing an air quench doing anything to control the quench? Ie room temperature or air circulation? I really like the idea of getting rid of the warping that happens with a water quench. Guess I'm going to have to do some testing today. Heat treating a pair of black and white gauntlets to...

And in other news I learned today that 410 requires an immediate anneal post welding while still hot from welding. Man this stuff is a bitch to weld. If anyone has a source for 410 mig wire in a small spool (all I could find was 30# spools) the info would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone have any info on air hardening 410 stainless?
So it air hardens quite a bit. I learned this by working it hot and then finding out that once it's been worked hot it either needs to keep being worked hot or annealed. The material data sheets also state that's it's air hardening. What I can't find is what the results of air hardening are specific...
