In case any else was wondering, here is Sir Alex's reply: I was able to contact this rider via email. His reply: Hello Eirik, The saddle I am using there is a regular Australian saddle. Essentially they are an English style saddle with the addition of 'polly's' which are the raised pieces which the ...

From experience, it's a bit pricey to ship from here(Indy) to there. I've done it, but it functionally adds about 50% to the cost. what about to Seattle, then it can be carried across the border? A little less painful, but only a little. Probably faster though. Much as I like the Canadians I've met...

I think, that done right, you might be able to have the shield be 'dead', the way metal swords on shields actually are. Maybe tack the foam down with glue and have a canvas cover that is held on with a drawstring. Done either as a 'for fun' occasional toy, or to see how deadening the impact changes ...

There is no SCA-wide regulation of padded weapons for youth combat.

Check with your local Youth Combat Marshals (if you have them, not all kingdoms do) for approved construction methods.

A friend of mine once proposed that the shields be inversely proportional to nostril size -- he'd even worked out a coefficient that made the shield sizes roughly 'normal' in size.

As for gauges, does anyone remember the year Ihashi got all the gauges at Pennsic thrown out? Every other helm was failing because some dingdong thought that slicing off bits of 1 inch round stock and welding them to stems was a good thing. Apparently, they hadn't actually measured the stock they u...

It wasn't enforced uniformly. Even as late as 89 when I was inspecting armor at Pennsic, guys were griping that they "Didn't enforce that in <fill> because everyone would have to get new helms". Nothing like being a fairly new marshal and failing three squires' helm, then their knight (a c...

Red Oak spear shafts were introduced East of the Mississippi by Morgan Alandris. I can't put a date on that. A few years later they were banned Society wide. I've heard so many ways of attaching tips! One thing I've just started doing is putting a single layer of tape on the tip before doing anything else. This way, when it tears off the end of the rattan, you can peel the tape attaching it off of the tape 'cover', instead of off the foam -which tend to...

As we refine things, we may well do some that are just under 1.25". Gotta make sure we have good control on things first.
