I think, that done right, you might be able to have the shield be 'dead', the way metal swords on shields actually are. There is no SCA-wide regulation of padded weapons for youth combat.

Check with your local Youth Combat Marshals (if you have them, not all kingdoms do) for approved construction methods.

A friend of mine once proposed that the shields be inversely proportional to nostril size -- he'd even worked out a coefficient that made the shield sizes roughly 'normal' in size.

As we refine things, we may well do some that are just under 1.25". Gotta make sure we have good control on things first.
