What really counts is (should be?) the broader fighting population, not ust the opinions of AA readers, KEMs or (dare I say it...) only the chiv. It is a well attended game, let's make it as much fun for as many as we can. One the one hand, yes, input from the general fighting community is good. On...

How were the punch daggers typically made? Did you mean to ask about punch bucklers - small offensive shields; or punch daggers - weapons typically made on the pattern of the Indian khatar with short thrust only blades and a grip at 90 degrees to the blade ? Neither one is very pleasant for those o...

How were the punch daggers typically made? As I recall, they were small forearm shields, strapped on, with a short length of rattan attached to the face, parallel to the arm and extending past the fist. This then had a thrusting tip. Typically, I saw them used in conjunction with a glaive, but I su...

Having been thru having a SEM attempt to ban rattan-cored siloflex, pretty much because he didn't like it, and him only relenting when his successor-in-waiting flat said he would reinstate it... Yeah, sometimes there is no testing, and only the most nominal of 'discussion' allowed.

One significant change that is (relatively) recent is the formal experimental process for trying new things. What would be the objection to putting shields as weapons thru that process? If they are inherently too dangerous, it should be readily apparent. And then we would all have the documented evi...

Postulating that a shield can be made according to the current weapons rules (call it a mass weapon for the sake of discussion), then blows landed with such could be judged according to the force of impact, just as we currently do. Single handed mass weapons are limited to 5#, and a 2' round shield...

Tell me again what has changed from when we used to have punch bucklers and shovel handle spears that make them safer now? Balin One fundamental change is III.B.1: "Striking an opponent with excessive force is forbidden." Using this as the overall standard did away with a lot of '90 degre...

He did round first, and for decades. It's good stuff, too, and he stands by it for life. Duke Moonwulf of the Midrealm has worn his shirt for at least 27 years that I know of.

Ok, so basically it's a great gambeson and wonderful padding but not enough for larger melees, right? With the kidney belt, I have no qualms about fighting in any melee. Without it, I don't think it's quite enough for the occasional "shit happens" unintentional excessive shot to the squis...

There are a couple different ways to look at that question. - I don't think that it and my Ti hauberk quite meet the SCA specs by themselves. Mainly because there is nothing there that is as stiff as heavy leather. - I would not be uncomfortable of feel unsafe in most melees wearing just the mail an...

Could be any number of things. Do you grip your sword tightly most of the time? If so, stop it. You should, imo, be relaxed and loose until right before the moment of impact. If your wrist is poorly aligned with the angle of the impact, that could cause problems, too. If you are 'pulling' your shot ...

Ha!

Under my mail is usually just a kidney belt and a tunic. I'm gonna have to pay attention to body shots, the gambeson is close to 3/4 inch thick of quite stiff quilted lined. I haven't been this heavily armored in 15 years!

The lacing points worked well, as far as setting up goes. The real test will be tomorrow when I fight in it, as well as wearing it from 9am until 5pm. :D

The leather elbows hadn't had arming holes in them yet, so I was able to drill them where I thought would work best.

It showed up at my door yesterday - way sooner than I expected for something shipped from Kiev to Indianapolis! ...
