I don't think the details of the application of the rule is descriptive enough or fully detailed but the part that is described seems to cover this particular discussion about using...

I actually quoted the previous discussion where THEY noted a significant lack of flexibility using a shaped sword. And I've tried to be clear that the lack of flex is from the initial diameter, not the shape. Just going from a minimum 1.25" dia. stick to the 1.75" dia. stick you feel is s...

All in all I am not trying to call anyone here a cheater. The written rule does seem to lack some definition and leaves it open to interpretation. What I do know is that wedges were banned long ago because of the reasons that have been discussed - More force generated and harder hits. But are speci...

Knowing that and still using it seems to me a violation of rule # 6 according to the rules of the list. What are you calling rule #6? m VII.A.6. The striking surfaces of all weapons, including the tip, shall be wrapped in a manner that allows no rattan splinters to protrude. VII.B.6. 6. Swords shal...

That is possible I guess but all you need to do is use a smaller piece of rattan and then you won't have to "treat" it in any way. It's why we use rattan in the first place. You can get it in the appropriate size for our sport without shaping or modification from its original form in orde...

And I'm saying that if I were using the full, round, 2.25 inch dia. piece of rattan, it would be just as (in)flexible as after I've shaved it to shape. And I'd have to back off on the force at least as much as I do for the finished product. The shaving has not changed the flexibility. Thick rattan i...

Trying to be clear here. I can't bend a 39 inch long, 2.25 inch dia. piece of rattan over my knee either. Before OR after I remove about half the mass, by shaping the sword. I have done NOTHING to affect the rattan flexibility. Thick rattan just ain't as flexible as minimum rattan. My sword is over ...

Shaped rattan weapons (pic heavy)

(Putting this here to not hijack Leo's excellent thread) I believe that if you compare a shaped rattan sword of, say, 2" blade depth against a 2" diameter unshaped stick you won't find any difference in stiffness. But if you compare that shaped 2" stick against a round stick of matchi...

Do "shaped" rattan sword bounce less? I'm wondering if there are ways to deaden the bounce with in SCA rules.... hmmm. Less, yes, since there is less flex. But it is still nowhere near how steel acts. As a corollary, less flex means more impact is transmitted to your opponent. Since I've ...

Light - Pretty much like Aaron defined. I wear pretty minimal armor - Ti mail over a tunic, hockey elbows & knees & a kidney belt, a good 14g stainless helm well padded & covered in leather. If it doesn't at least smart a bit, it would not have injured a man in our presumed standard armo...

The fighting has been amazing each year. The audiences are great. This year Sir Crispin is organizing the fighters as a 100 Years War army camp waiting to get paid. Gaming, with no money and other 'idle camp' things. We're also going to try to teach audience militia volunteers some basic pike drill.
