Been trying to think of how to say just that. Thank you.
As a training tool, I'd be for it. As a determinant of an actual bout, single or melee, hell no.

Re: Mail options
Chainmail is not very effective for use against blunt force groups like the sca. I used to think this. But when I added my Ti Mail shirt, I had to stop using a gambeson under my kidney belt because I could no longer feel blows to the body. When the mail is belted & bloused, loose around my torso, i...

It's just padded with some neoprene foam I had on hand for now. The aventaille is from Atlanta Armory, the bronze trim is one of his standard upgrades.

I've padded & strapped it finally (work and Pennsic prep are consuming much time right now). I'm pretty sure the Danr (Irontree Works ) has made them, too. He'll be at Pennsic with his shop. Hell, he'd probably help you make'em yourself there.

I use hockey elbows & knees. The elbows are under the tunic & mail, the knees under the pants. I do not wear any other leg armor or arm armor. My hand protection is currently hockey gloves covered in suede (and falling apart, need to finish the next thing).

Re: Cost of Rattan
I'm not sure if the supply is still limited due to embargo/trade restrictions. Eirik would likely have more information. The only effect the 'trade restrictions' had was a slight rise in costs, it was a change in the tariff structure in favor of exporting finished goods over raw poles. The increase...

Then, there are those that think only fighting awards matter on the field. ;) I don't recall if it was a Midrealm thing or an SCA thing, and don't have the time to track it down right now, but I seem to recall that it was 'law' at one point (80's?) that only fighting awards were to be used on the l...

Munitions Grade Arms Pennsic Stuff
First off, I've gotten the upgrade and am now on Battle Road between Reconstructing History and By My Hand Designs. -- I will have the dark gray, heavier, fiberglass spears this year after a 4 year hiatus on them. They will be cut to 8'10" and 11'2" lengths. I will only have 20 of each length. -- I ...

how much flex do the slashing spears have? About like 1 3/8 in. rattan. The hafts are 1 5/16 wide, by 1.5 along the plane of the blade. Which reminds me. I just dropped a dozen sticks off at Dyderich's for shaping. If someone wants something custom for Pennsic delivery, I need to know in the next w...

I've used Manila, hemp and sisal with no issues with any of them, no staining. I do keep an eye on tensions and adjust during the course of the day. The only time I saw my center pole under too much tension was when the canvas was brand new and shrank the first few times in heavy dew.
