I'm honestly not an expert on Katana. My impression is that they were a little longer than that, but I have no direct knowledge to back it up. I'd suggest some quick research, and if that is the length you want, I'll happily do it, I just prefer to ask since I'm not sure.

Hmmm 38" is actually in the normal range for one-hand swords. And a little short for most Katanas.
