I only wish I'd ... Had a few Glorious Victories, to accompany my magnificent and Splendid Defeats You did, old pal: You certainly clobbered me more than I clobbered you. I just promised sexual favours to the film editor to make sure your moments of glory ended on the cutting room floor. Old Hollyw...

Despite Freiman's kind words, I am not a very good pole arm. In the days when I did have a somewhat deserved reputation, it was based on one technique - a very accurate, extremely fast, maximum-range thrust, often combined with a step like a spearfighter would use). I won a lot of bouts - and the oc...

Good pole fighters to ask are Tamiki (who I think lives in the outlands now) a fellow in Texas named Inman, and Adamstjohn from the archive (who is currently KEM of Drachenwald). My dear pal Freiman has promoted me waaaaay out of my league there..... but I'll try and come up with some ideas for you...

What a crowd you guys had! How did you organize such an event? Ah, we cannot claim the credit there. We were guests of the local reenactment society, the Company of the Duke's Leopards. They had taken on the task of running the "medieval corner" at the Island's agricultural fair. We just turned up ...

Video of Swan and Cross fighting on Jersey
Dear all, The Company of the Duke's Leopards on Jersey hosted three members of Drachenwald's Company of the Swan and Cross and our good friend Robert of Canterbury. The Talented filmmaker Andrew Baker-Miles made this wonderful movie: m You'll recognise three regular archivers: Giles of Redheugh (kla...

I was spelling Der Weisskunig wrong (though on page 70 they spell it yet another way, Der Weisskuenig. Sigh...). Just for info, Weisskünig and Weisskuenig are the same thing. In German, you can write the "Umlaut" signs either as two dots over the vowel (ä, ö, ü) or as an "e" following (...

Re: Huh?
"Details suck. Man up and hit him." Also " Focusing the spirit should be first. Details can come later." Actually, I think such advice is very good - for certain students - and disasterous for others. It depends on the student, the way they learn and their current position on their learning path. I...

Talbot, gentleman that he is, wrote: Let me know how many you broke and I'll replace them. I'm also working on stainless ones that should be virtually indestructable. Here's a shot of me in the helm which shows what I mean. Look how much the helmet bulges out over my ears (looks cool, I think), but see how little room I have over the brow. This is after leaping up and down on the helm to get more front-to-back room... This is why I think you should not rely on an...

Doesn't it generally clash with Wisby Medieval Week ? That was my impression, but I admit being calendar challenged. Well, it depends how you define "Pennsic". If you think of Pennsic just being the last "battle" week, it's usually possible to do both Wisby and Pennsic. A few folks do boh most years.

I bought just this offer. It's a decent helm, and just amazing value for the price. Mine is also too tight (Van Sussen gives fair warning of that in his ad). The shape is unusual - the helm is wider from ear to ear than it is from nose to back. This looks spiffy but makes it interesting to pad - dee...

Re: Basic question after first ratan fight
If I allowed my opponent to hit my arm in order to get a clean shot at his face: Would this be his point as his blow landed first? Or would it be mine because I lost an arm whereas he lost his life? It depends which arm you mean. If it is the arm holding your weapon, then the above applies. In othe...

I also have several pairs of Andrew Ward gauntlets. He is one of my heroes too, for producing so many pairs at basically cost price: I am sure he has saved us hundreds of hand injuries. Recently, I tried on a pair of Windrose gauntlets. They were just startlingly good. A different price class altoge...

Leo looks great on the field, whatever he is wearing. The first time I saw him, I just noticed him as a guy who would go out on the field and just stand medievally... Unfortunately, I think there are far fewer archivers in France than in Germany. A bunch of the guys (not all) who chipped in to help Jehan were SCA folks, and they are few and far between to the left of the Rhine. There is a small group in Paris - why don't you try m They might have some contacts in...
