thursdays ravine did seem to have a few stout spear thrusts. i got hit twice by spears, both times very hard, once to the grille and once to my belly. certainly not excessive in my mind but harder than usual. It's been a few years since I used a spear, but I can remember a few times, in rather inte...

Funny -- it does kind of look like a video game. When William drew an arrow back and the camera was looking right through the ABD tube, I almost expected a little circle and crosshairs to appear on the target!

That's me using a bastard sword one-handed and it looks like I'm about to get hammered (though honestly I don't remember how this one came out). Boy, that tunic is drab. Ugly helm. Hockey gloves. My stuff looks like crap.

Re: Excessive?

does nobody understand physics? Every shot I take or don't take is based on the physics of the situation. The guy got hit in the back of the head while he was moving away from the shot. The helmet took the impact but his head jerked forward because all that momentum had to go somewhere, and it wasn...

Sounds like a lot of good memories. I forgot to add -- one reason I was so enthused in the Ravine Battle was the wardrums. I can see why armies have had drummers, trumpets, etc. for thousands of years.

If I had ever, in my quarter-century of SCA fighting, hit somebody as hard as I possibly could, that would be excessive. When a spearman broke my widdle nose in the Ravine Battle, that was excessive (and 'way beyond what our rules call for). I don't want to hurt people (except for that one time in t...

So glad the lady is recovering. Necks are so vulnerable; hate to think of anybody getting hurt there. The only two serious injuries I've heard of at Gulf Wars (this injury, and the lady fighter breaking her leg a few years ago) were both in the Fort Battle. The Ravine Battle on Thursday gave me that feeling that keeps me in the SCA. I lost count of my trips to the res point; quite a few, given my h...

Lucius -- what sort of padding do you have stuffed into the linen? For years I've been using open-cell foam rubber sewn into an old cotton pillow case; it fits inside the helm without being glued or tied in, so it's easy to take out and wash. The design is basically a hemicylinder around my head, wi...

I've got a question: do you ever see a separate mail fauld before the late 14th century? It seems plausible that in earlier times, a soldier who couldn't afford a full hauberk might be able to afford at least enough for a fauld.

I've got pain in both shoulders -- probably not serious, as I've had it a quarter century. Might right quadriceps tendon still aches a bit where it ruptured and was repaired a few years ago.

I'm losing weight, and even a little lightening of the load helps.

I just now made a trapezoidal satchel-type purse with tassels, thanks to looking at Karen's pages. I used a brocade remnant with a canvas lining, but I imagine it would work fine in leather. An hour's work (with a sewing machine, anyway).

Kinda makes sense to me now. We're not going to accurately reproduce the mass and velocity of real ballista bolts (or catapulted rocks!) because we don't want a lot of people going to the hospital; so we adjust the rules accordingly, like with everything else we do.
