You make a point, young Oswyn. Say, how does it feel to get hit with one of those? A bit more solid than a regular arrow, I'd imagine.

Ballista bolt hit any part of you, or anything you control (shield/weapon/etc) you are dead. Town battle at Pennsic 06 "Sir, you are dead. No, I deflected the bolt with my sword. Sir, the bolt hit your weapon, you are dead. But I caused it to hit my weapon! Your fault, Sir." Thanks, Oswyn...

Man vs. Ballista (clarification on melee rules)

(Note: this subject has probably been covered before, but with the search feature offline, I couldn't find it.) I've been doing a lot of stuff to prepare for Gulf Wars, so it's not suprising that last night, I dreamed about it. I was in the Fort Battle (which I've yet to do) inside the Fort; a balli...

Hey -- Meridies is allied with Ansteorra, and as it happens, I already have a black-on-gold torse! Maybe I'll give it a try too.

Say, is there an ATM onsite at Gulf Wars? I don't want to travel with too much cash.

The 14th century examples are large armoured *collars*, that the head sits in, and rotates around in, that do not come close to the actual flesh of the neck itself - it the Art depicting them is in any way realistic. They are *NOT* like commonly seen SCA gorgets, and only one or two reenactors seem...

To creep the topic, what about those who die "Offensively"? If you die offensively then you reliquish ALL grounds for me to be polite. Meaning if you are NOT laying flat out on the ground IMMEDIATELY after dieing, then I am going to do my best to PUT you there. Dude, I keep parsing this, ...

I've been stepped on -- and I don't have a shield. Not by cleats, fortunately (but that's one reason I wouldn't wear cleats in a melee). If I'm gotten in a melee, and there's a clear path for me to exit, I just leave the scene with my hands up, rather than drop. Unless I just feel like a little napp...

I hate the sticker idea. I think it should be posted very far in advance what colors are going to denote what side so everyone will have the time to make or buy something that will denote what side they will be on. If you fail to do acquire something that will fit into that color scheme then you de...

Seriously, what I was thinking about was this: I've often thought of painting my helmet a lovely shade of blue. However, I don't do it because, at a big SCA "war" event (like Gulf Wars next week), the opposing sides are often identified by colored stickers placed on the helmets. At Pennsic...

"Live weapons" is meant to refer to real, metal axes & knives, but it also sounded silly to me. Just one of those bits of SCA jargon that grate on my ear.

If things go well, I should finish the event happy but exhausted.

I've found that even getting a little lighter helps. When I get down to my goal weight, it'll be like I've taken off a fanny pack with 60 pounds of lead ingots in it, and I think I'll be a lot less likely to injure a knee or ankle. Though really, the thing that's most often made me quit fighting ear...

How about bastard sword against greatsword? In my experience, it's been an even match -- if you can get into range with the bastard sword. (A viscount once grudgingly let me try my bastard sword against his greatsword; I believe he actually used the phrase "wasting my time". I took more pl...

And as a prophylactic, make sure to stretch and warm up before getting into a hitting-with-sticks situation. If you run regularly, hopefully that means you stretch regularly too, so I'd just make sure to get some blood flow in your muscles before you fight. Maybe even rub on some Ben Gay beforehand.

JB -- it's not quite as freakin' simple as you might think. Your two analogies (747 and baseball bat) contain logical errors that render them unserviceable for purposes of our discussion. In the first (747 hitting a brick wall at 500 mph vs. touching the wall and applying thrust), the overwhelming f...
