Adam, Thanks for the feedback. I dunno...maybe I will cut it, maybe I won't. LOL. But now that it is actually on the helmet, maybe I could thread a red string through the links I want to cut. That might make it easier to tell "where I am" during the trim-to-fit process. Heck the maille could use som...

Brian That is the same shape my wife and I are talking about doing one day, except I like the tall walls and short roof ones better FYI you get a better shape on your side you need to take the ropes put further or do poles. With roped tents your rope has to go out at less of a slant than the wall o...

Yeah, some cords coming through the maille (to tie or fasten on the outside) might just be the solution. I may give that one a try---thanks!

Adding Maille to an SCA Kettle

Here's my project from this morning, adding a "faked" maille coif to my SCA fighting helmet, a Kettle/Chapel de Fer by Adam Berry of White Mountain Armoury (see below). I clipped the top off a MRL riveted coif and laced it onto the helmets lower grill/cage using heavy waxed thread. http://img.photob...

Consider gamboised cuisses to attach your soupcan knees to. Very period and perhaps fairly decent as far as sca-combat effectiveness goes. Here's some pics for you: m m m I may be casting up a batch of Roger de Trumpington belt fittings soon, let me know if you are interested. These would be the sam...

i like that design! i don't know the traditional decoration for these but what you have shown has a good feel. the only thing i might suggest is an overall background pebbling effect between the decorative carvings---but honestly, i'm not sure it needs it.

New Tool: Cutting Scales

Yeah, my Scythian scale harness project is speeding along just like a glacier! I started making scales by snipping lengths from a coil of 1.25" wide steel strapping tape (approx 22-20 ga). Hand held snips do work but make it difficult to get a perfect 90-degree cut across the tape. And my 47-year-ol...

My formula is to throw in a "sure-fire-success" project every once in a while to keep my morale up. Something I know I can finish and have fun at without too much blood sweat or tears. Once my confidence (in myself)is patched up, I go back to the cutting edge and experimentation.

What Color is Iron (Armor)?

I have started my Scythian scale armor. I am using steel but I'm curious---what color would iron scales look like? Black? Dull grey? Can iron be shined up to look like "white metal"? Would they bother? In the ancient poems, iron armor is often described as "lustrous" or dull. I'd like my armor to ha...

I am planning a pair of d-rings on each side: one at temple level, the other at jaw level). Each D-ring would be held by a short leather loop strap and secured to the helmet by one Chicago post. A four strap chin cup would be attached to the d-rings. I have no idea how I want ot adjust it though. it...

Hmmm....

I will probably just end up drilling holes and using Chicago screws to mount the straps because that would be easier and I could do it at home.

Helmet: Strap Mounts Welded inside?

Hi Folks, I have a Corinthian for SCA combat that I want to equip with a double mounted chin-strap system (i.e. a set of high attachment points and a set of low attachment points). Do I have any other choice than drilling holes and riveting the straps to the interior? I really hate the idea of marri...
