The first drawing shows a man on the left wearing a helmet with cow horns. Since he was swedish that means that 15th C swedes wore horned helmets. Swedes were Vikings. A 15th C helmet with horns did not come from a vacuum. There must be a cultural preference for horned helmets. That means that my 1...

Adam,

Have you been in contact with Tess the Huntress? She is a mover and shaker in the SCA CA world. She used to post a lot here but has been conspicuously absent lately. Anyway, she is local to me. Anything I can do to help your cause, do not hesitate to ask!

Cheers,

DSJ, Here'a a little tip for using the Armour Archive Forum: When you post a thread, try to put as much information as possible into the title of the thread. At the moment, I am considering something like a leather sole with a combo of hobnails and leather strip treads, that would be rigged with straps & buckles like a patten. I had considere the cording idea, but I see it more subject to wear and wobble than the leather strips (with the stitching inset ...

I would recommend Hispanic Costume: 1480 - 1530 by Ruth M. Anderson.

It's great on clothing. Can't remember how it is on arms and armour (or even if it has any at all).

I was just reviewing my own design. It occurs to me that these would not be "self-cleaning" like modern lug soles are designed to be. That might mean as soon as they were clogged with mud, they would be slippery again. Hmmm...maybe some thick leather "pattens" with hobnail treads? The hobnails might...

I've often heard fighters say that they've had to learn to fight and step differently, but it brings them a consciousness of their feet that they appreciate. Help: Period Traction for Turnshoes?

Question: Does anybody know of a period method for giving traction to smooth-sole shoes? I have mentioned that I was planning to put rubber vibram lugsoles on my new Revival Leather riding boots, which I wear in SCA combat (in my impression of a late medieval dismounted crossbowman). As many have o...

Well, let's play semantics: how are "cannons" defined by the BoD? Does the definition ban a man-portable tennis-ball launcher in the shape of a tube mounted to a tiller?

Sorry, I was asking if the cannon used a rubber band (i.e. lengths of surgical tubing, etc.) to propel a projectile or if it shot rubber band projectiles. If I had read more carefully you plainly state it shot tennis balls. My bad! HOWEVER: If a style of cannon or gonne is pre 1600, uses an approved...

Maeryk Do not waste your time on a rubberband powered cannon. They are not allowed in any form, society rules. I had started on one a few years ago. I took a balista bolt to the shoulder (fighting spear) at Black stone raids last year. Thank God it didn't hit me in the cup. Yes, if the event allows em -- they're very useful. Thanks, I'll let you know about the shearing. How much did the individual scales cost you and what size/thickness where they?

And hey, how about posting a pic of the finished armour? I'd love to see it and I'm sure others would as well.

Thanks,
