Okay, so yinz are making fun of this helm...why? Are you sure this is not a valid permutation of the pig-face helm? Can you remember what you thought the first time you saw a pigface helm, how bizarre and other-worldy it looked at first glance? Why is this helm so different? Okay, the position of th...

I have been e-mailing La Wren's Nest to see if they could get some prices on the Deepeeka scales; La Wren is a reseller for Deepeka. Here's the latest two e-mails: Dear Tim, Deepeeka finally got back to me regarding the scales...

I use a bow that is oak and hickory, laminated into a two-color wood that resembles a yew bow. I know it resembles a yew bow becaus...

I'm missing something: the problem born because someone told you that they wore only full sleeved maille? As i know, half sleeve became quite common as time proceed. Exactly. I was getting the idea that long sleeves and wedge rivets were dominant. But now I am beginning to see that half sleeves wer...

A Mail Shirt for all Reasons: Part II
A Mail Shirt for all Reasons: Part II Here's a short follow-up thread to one I started a few weeks back: I was looking through Osprey's The Swiss at War 1300-1500 and Gerry Embleton has presented several illustrations showing soldiers in elbow-length mail shirts! At least one of the Schilling illus...

Hey Todd, I am just trying to get the ball rolling here. Steve of Forth Armoury said he might look into having scales mass-produced and was looking for input, so I threw in my opinion. What happens next, who can say? But Steve is a good dude and I believe he can and will make it happen---if it is fe...

Horn Panel Medieval Candle Lantern on Sale at HE
There are frequently posts on this R & A board about what to do for period lighting. Well, I was browsing the HE site and happened across the following item on sale for $29.95. It's a really beautiful brass medieval candle lantern with a horn paneled door. That seems like a great price. If you are l...

Thanks for the encoraging words, Todd. The hole pattern is certainly up for discussion. My pattern was designed to fit a variety of uses. (1) The scales could be wired/stapled together using the side hole pairs and a small bit of horizontal overlap. The assembled rows would be sewn onto the base usi...

It covers the opening of the byrnie, but does not spread and drape over the shoulders. Typicle "U" shaped face opening. I'll try to remember to weigh it tonight. I know it weighed more than my helm at that time, which was 2 1/2#. One nice thing about it is the double row of brass rings runnig verti...

Lord Magnus the Black, Beautiful shields! However, I am a bit tickled you (apparently) included the line detail from the original engraving the beastie was based on. At a rate of $0.10 per scale, that would be close to double (approx) what The Ring Lord used to charge for their large scales. The large scales ran for around $56/1000 for mild steel, $55/1000 for brass and $65/1000 for nickel plated mild steel. Granted, these were not "authentic" designs for scale...

Matt, I used watered down school glue (aka white glue). I painted a layer onto the underside of the cloth and also coated the aluminum. Then I pressed the canvas against the aluminum and carefully "squeegeed" out any bubbles or wrinkles. To finish, I coated the outer surface of the canvas with anoth...

Thanks for the kind words. The size of the face plate with hook is 2" x 0.875". I have no idea of what it will sell for yet. That depends on the production cost. Gregory, Look in the paper and on e-bay for wooden boats, row boats, skiffs, dorys, etc. People often lose their storage or move or are just down on their luck and the boat is often the first thing to go. This boat would give you the experience of sailing, rowing or whatever and let you learn. When ...

Question: How thick should these scales be? Also what is the target price? Steve They should be as thin as reasonably possible. I was thinking more like 20 ga or even 22 ga. If possible, you might offer a weight for LH and another weight for sport combat. My estimate is that a vertically overlapped...
