Doesn't Vecellio's book of costumes feature a number of illustrations of Jannisaries? It falls within the SCA time period.

BTW you look marvelous!

That's incredible-but I have to wonder about the ascribed date of 6th c. BC . X-Post: Need Info on Horn Scale Helms

Please check out my post in the Armour Construction forum. I am considering making a scale helm and would like to know what evidence there is for them.

Scale-Covered Helms? Horn scales? Help!!!

There's an upcoming "Viking" event in February (hosted by the SCA, near Pittsburgh, PA) that I am thinking about attending. I don't have a helm but am considering making a simple conical helm covered in horn scale (i.e. staggered, partially overlapping rows of roughlt rectangular scales, approx. 1.5...

I have seen that the issue of what is "period" when used within the SCA seems typically to refer to the overall time frame of the Society, namely the year 1600 and before. So, if a SCA member calls a Victorian kilt, or a English Civil War kit "out-of-period" (aka OOP) this is often what is being ref...

If you are going for the latter half of the 1500's you might go for a mail hauberk (with hidden torso armour underneath), mail mantle (or plate gorget), burgeonete (with bars), hidden knees (inside full-cut venetian breeches), full plate arms & gauntlets. Wonderful idea! I'd advise to get the enthusiasm for the ancient period going first and be more lenient on kit the first few years in order to get the energy and numbers. Agreed on all points. It is highly speculative---but I'd rather base a reconstruction on something rather than just cop out and use a Roman wall tent. Note that paintings show that the Mongolians had tents aside from gers/yurts that mimic the same shape. My guess is that they were more portable and ...
