The maille shirts depicted in the Bayeaux (sp?) Tapestry appear to have elbow-length sleeves and are long enough to reach to just above the knee. You might call them "short sleeved".

Gabriel, Sorry to hear about your RL issues! I had to sell my Corinthian & entire Greek harness back in 2000 for the same reason. Now that I am working again and things are more stable for me, I am giving your helm some serious consideration. The only hitch for me is the coloration of the crest; pur...

Speaking of which, and mentioning again I am not a European armor historian, they wore padded jacks OVER the chainmail? Interesting. Did they also wear padding under it at the same time? What, exactly, is a padded jack made of? And how padded is it? I can't think of any cloth or soft leather that w...

I believe wearing quilted armor OVER maille, as is often seen depicted, would seem to be effective against arrows. We know from historical accounts that fabric jacks were effective. Then add the maille on the bottom to stop anything the fabric does not stop. I theorize that this setup would be effec...

As I have posted elsewhere, I am thinking of buying 2 shirts from Kings Lance and useing the sleeves and skirt off one to augment the other into a long sleeved knee length hauberk. The only catch is that I don't have the tools or skill to rivet links to do the attachments. I'll use the remainder of ...

Me too. I am thinking of buying 2 shirts from KL and using one to augment the other into a long-sleeved hauburk. I'd use the maille left over from the second shirt as a cammaille, ventaille, etc. I just got to find somebody who can do the joining of the pieces for me at a decent price (or learn to d...

My idea is to cover Ancient to Classical times. Possibly from 1186 BC Trojan War to 467 Fall of Rome? However, this is all subject to the will of the participants, plus further discussion and exploration.

Okay "Early" fans, let's not get too contentious or prickly here :D , our goal is to make the Early portrayals better, stronger and more accepted---NOT to piss off the SCA at large.

Possible Commission: Tailoring Riveted Mail

It occurs to me that I could buy two of the $300 flat ring, round rivet shirts from one of the internet vendors and use the parts from one to modify the other. For example, since the sleeves are only elbow length, use part of the sleeves from the second shirt to extend the first shirt to have full l...

Mac T, It seems as if you are using the word "period" as it applies to the scope of the SCA, and "period" as it applies to a single portrayal of a time and place as interchangeable . However, these terms in the aforementioned usages are not inclusive of one another. Something is within the SCA perio...
