While we don't know for certain what medieval round pavilions (consisting of a conical roof and straight or slanted side walls) used for support, the fact is that the method often illustrated in the period paintings (i.e. a center pole and radially spaced guy ropes) is enough . It seems reasonable (...

Dig the lion's faces (where the rope meets the canvas---white round tent on the right side) in James' example! I have never noticed that before.

Yeah, I saw the same hood as part of the Bog People exhibit. Cool hood but not exactly "viking" era. Personally, I'd stay away from it for an early medieval norse impression.

Reviews Wanted on Cafe Press Products

I want to publish some t-shirts via Cafe Press but I have never bought anything from them and am seeking reviews by those of you that have. How is the quality of their shirts? How is the quality of the printing?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Cheers,
Tim

I definitely wouldn't come to any conclusions about the sort of armour depicted on Sea People illustrations... Please note that I wrote "...could be characterized as...". The art in question is certainly subject to interpretation. Since there are no artifacts of Sea People's armour extant, nobody k...

William, I agree. But since the sword would not be for actual use and perhaps rarely if ever leave the scabbard it would end up being a defacto fashion accessory. As such I would have no special need to spend a small fortune on it---as long as the hilt is presentable and the scabbard also worthy of ...

There are Ancient Egyptian tomb drawings that depict both quilted cloth armours and scale armours. IIRC some scale was leather, some was metal and some was mixed (alternating rawhide & metal) scales). There are also depictions of plate gorgets (as in the Dendra panopy). The Sea People are depicted i...

This cost me something like $350 shipped a few years back. It's approx 8.5' diam at the eaves and approx.11' diam at the floor. Approx 6' at the door and approx 11.5' tall total. It's not set up very taut here in this photo as this was the first time I set it up. I kinda wish the roof was shorter fo...

...From what I have read most "locks" that required some type of key were internal. Ie, actually embedded into the chest/door/box, etc. with just a face plate and hole for the key... I beg to differ. Seperate external locks go back a long way, at least to medieval times. Consider fetterlocks (simil...
