I'm not saying that you should not help others, but get your own kit in order first and review all your research. Before you help other folks (assumedly, in the same sort of kit that you have researched) know what is dead on correct per historical examples and what is speculative or just plain wrong...

If I ever get my Scythian encampment put togther, I would indeed be tempted to recreate the fume tent and its equippage---if only for the novelty of it. But as long as pot smoking is illegal I would not be using these things to break the law. Period.

Just sayin'

...Re: the Scythians, that is from Herodotus, near the end of book 1, I believe, where he reports that the Scythians have a fume bath where they make an air-tight tent, put red-hot stones in it, climb in and toss hemp seeds on the fire. And, as Herodotus reports, it is "far superior to any fume bat...

Hey, Thorvaldr do you have any photos around of tooled gorgets you have done? I have an idea for one for my Scythian fighting gear and may want to make a commission in the future.

Okay, it's something like this Birka pouch that Beathan of Armor and Castings offers. And here's another example that I believe is by those groovy European Viking Trader folk that show up to merchant at Estrella and Pennsic. I have seen (photos of) the artifacts before and IIRC there's not much of t...

Is the poster perhaps thinking of a late 16th century codpiece that is an accessory/component to trunkhose or even Venetian trousers (though I'm not sure I can remember seeing the latter)? Modern (Ren Faire) impressions of Commedia del Arte costumes and May-time trappings of foolery have oft times s...

... One problem- maybe two-- I can carry a backup, but I must drop my bow first. Since I have an x-bow, I must remove it from the field, I cannot simply drop it where I stand. I have been told of archers yielding, then resuming combat as soon as the challenger has walked away. THAT is unchivalrous,...

SCA shields vary pretty widely... Put the crack pipe down, K. Depending on your location, he's right. Just went to a gathering in southern Georgia and your typical Atlantian area kite or round shield didn't seem to exist. Out of 15-20 fighters, I think there were 3 kites. Rae Rae, my comment was re...

I'd love to see a large group (something along the lines and scope of the SCA) that caters to an ancient time frame as an alternate to medieval. And to see the combat system configured to make the best of ancient weapons, armour and tactics.

Of course I have no desire to see wizards and such, yet I find that idea not much more fantastic than Vikings and 1st century Romans sharing the field with Lansknechts, Crusaders, Mongols, Medieval Knights and Samurai. I find this an interesting discussion because I participate in the SCA as a Combat Archer using a crossbow. Re: WTB 14th century ground fighting helm

I am looking for a functional 14th century ground fighting helm, and simple bascinet, with an acceptable visor. Thisis for Living history as opposed to the SCA, if it is possible to avoid the grill. You may not find this useful, yet I will suggest it for your consideration. As well as a solid pig-f...
