Hi, you beat me to that. Elastic, hehehe. Interesting points! Because the coifs are depicted as form fitting in most cases, it is logical to theorize they are fastened below the chin and across the throat somehow. But we are just presuming there are ties. I guess there could be other logical possibi...

The Vikings site has a pattern for the Heddeby Hood , although to be honest I can't make heads or tails of it!! Gwen I cut out the pieces (in miniature) and played around with them but I can't come up with anything that would fit a human body. I can't figure out how there are enough pieces to give ...

Yeah, I was posting about this issue on another thread. I am part of the unkempt crowd often that wears my coif untied. Aside from the fact that I perhaps should not be wearing a coif at all for the late 1300's---I get the impression that the untied look, while reflected in the visulal record, is pe...

Mike, I like your costuming and prop work but IMHO I think your website graphics still need to be improved a bit to reflect the level of quality of your product. For instance what is with the bleached-out photo on your home page? A full color one would be better, IMHO. I do think you are making prog...

I bought the tweedy-bird-face "houndskull" that de Keyser lists but I got it on e-bay being resold by somebody who must have been unimpressed by it. I know this helmet would make a lot of you blow chunkc but like it alot. It is a funky visor indeed but I have always liked the oddness of it---and tha...

Excellent point. From my quick shoot-from-the-hip survey of the other day I think I did turn up some other images of crowns on coifs, shown in other contexts (i.e. seated on the throne, at a feast) but they all date to that same era. And the only one that wasn't a redraw was the one I posted. Sorry,...

Jorvik Woman,, I just addressed this same question in another thread where some well-dressed SCA folks are photo'd feasting in a real castle. There was a King in the photos wearing a crown over a coif and it just struck me as strange---and a fashion I had been unfamiliar with. As you have seen in th...

Recreating an Outfit from an Illumination: The Dagger
This is part of my proposed project of recreating an outfit worn by a figure in an illumination from the 1315 Manessa Codex. For this segment, I want to address the dagger (seen on the right hip of the figure with the blue gown). As discussed in a previous thread the dagger shown in the illumination...

There's some fun stuff there to be sure. I am having a hard time interpreting the construction and form on some of those hats! And of course there are wonderful details here and there. Note that the white sword belt becomes a white belt for the crossbow gear in one image. We see several examples of ...

Here's the thread about my cart To address your questions: I looked at carts in Durer and Brugel and was inspired by them. But every cart or wagon I could find looked like they used 5 to 6 foot diameter wheels with the axle right under the bed. I knew I could not manage such big wheels (to expensiv...

This really calls for a STRUT YOUR HISTORICAL HAT thread...doesn't it? Of course, I really dig that hat of Jeff's. that you have dubbed the cabbage hat. Thanks, Gwen. I sure appreciate your enthusiasm, and I know you and I are able to get in tune idea-wise and work well together. My next step might be to postulate a pattern, but let me come up with it and then I can solicit your advice and refinements. Regarding the period and purpose, sometimes my ...

Yep. And consider this outfit represents just a lark for me! It is not a period I currently do nor do I have an event it is needed for. On top of this project, I am hoping for next Pennsic to have 2-3 more Scythian outfits done plus at least a Greek set of combat armour (to be worn OVER Scythian clo...

Yep, good thoughts! I leave it to you to figure out the chausses, and know I will want a pair. Since a fully-sewn gambeson would be a neat thing to have I am tempted to "do it right" for the most part. But I understand your points about thickness and thermal issues and I will give those concerns som...

Perfecto!!! I sent Lutel an inquiry. They offer the grip in oak, which should look suitably like the illumination. Thanks, James! If the price is not to my liking, well I have plenty of blades and I could certainly make my own wooden hilt and scabbard. --- For my next step. I will do flat view drawi...

The hair issue cuts both ways. I wanted shoulder-length-plus long hair for doing a Scythian impression so about 2 years ago I stopped cutting my hair. It's about shoulder length now. I want it middle-of-the-back length if I can stand it---but we will see. But guess what? I had to quit my WWI re-enac...

For the gown I am considering going linen. This is because I feel the outfit will probably be worn in warm weather, and because it will be worn over a gambeson (which will already be warm). I will perhaps go with a nice coral/salmon color I saw at JoAnnes. Yeah, I hate JA but every once in a while t...
