Well, I don't know the chances we would ever find something identical to the Manessa. So let me think about it---I would probably want the red/black.

Good points, Gwen. I might be tempted to "pipe" the gown anyhow just to approximate the effect. But if not at the edge, I'd certainly consider doing a line of narrow white tape set back an inch or so around the collar---again, just to approximate the image. Any ideas about that neck opening? Is it a...

Thanks, Oswyn. I think I know the sword you mean. It's sometimes called a fish-tail sword or an Italian merc sword and it is late 14th to a solid 15th cent style. I do like that sword type but I'd rather get closer to a late 13th cent sword shape and size for the prupose of this outfit. I have seen ...

For the sword, a hip hanger is just fine. It just has to look good and be the right color and style. I do not demand that it be a "real" sword and would rather not spend the several hundreds it takes to have an Albion or Angus Trim. But thanks for the thought. --- Gwen noted that the image is identi...

For swords, maybe this:

or this:

Recreating an Outfit from an Illumination

On another thread, Gwen of Black Swan Designs posted this image: I am intrigued with the idea of recreating the outfit of the figure wearing what appears to be: ⋅  black ankle-high boots ⋅ spiral-striped chausses ⋅&...

...I absolutely love the idea of the diagonal striped chausses and have some gorgeous stuff in the shop right now to do them with, so that's a real possibility... Please shoot me a photo of the fabric (when you have time in your jam-packed schedule, that is). I'd love something very close to the co...

I LOVE the the outfit on the "squire" in this image! That undergarment reads as a high-collared aketon/gambeson with vertical quilt lines to me---what do you folks think? And I gotta get me some of the spiral striped chauses----Gwen, pretty...

Men Wearing Coifs: When, Where and How?

Men Wearing Coifs: When, Where and How? There has been a lot of back and forth on this topic amongst re-enactors. Are many re-enactors wearing coifs in an anachronistic way? For the wrong social class or profession? Or not according the prevailing fashion of the era they are targeting? Let's discuss...

Robyn, This morning I looked at the drawings again. Of course, they are not really very racy, per se. But the one that hits me negatively me is the elbows chart---it just looks like a little girl. <sigh> I guess I have just seen one too many reports (here in the US) about kids being victimized by mo...

I beg you not to read a snarky tone into what I originally posted. I do miss things in the iconography because I often look with my own agenda...to see things I am interested in. I have never payed the most attention to the finer detail of what kings look like or what they wear.

Cheers,

A coif worn under a crown? Have I missed noticing that detail in the period iconography?

Don't be coy, Michael. Nudity is not the issue. Context is. I have never heard anybody suggest that Michealangelo was trying to be purient. However, Robyn's drawings are intended to be "naughty"...aren't they? Are you suggest that they are not? Look back over my posts. My question, in essence, was w...

Since she has already presented here in a public forum that she is a lesbian, I suggest to you that her opinions might not reflect what the "average woman" wants to see. Is that fair to say?

Funny, I missed the outcry when Jeff & Gwen created the "How a (wo)man Schall be Armed" poster.... I see a difference, though it may be splitting hairs. What HE presented is a tongue-in-cheek parody of a a "well known" historical image and they did it in the guise of one product, a poster. Furt...

Let me start by stating that the following comment is not a critique of Robyn's drawing talents. Believe me I'm no prude. I appreciate a Vargas or a racy pin-up as much as the next healthy heterosexual red-blooded male . That being said, IMHO these drawings seem inappropriate and unprofessional in t...

I agree. No replica of any kind made by the most skilled artist and craftsman could ever surpass that. The only way it could possibly be better would be to superglue nickels all over it.
