I am very excited about all this, Matt! I'd love to have a front-only cuirass and hoop fauld---including the nad protector. All fabric or leather covered, of course. Maybe you could make it as a parts kit for me to complete with my choice of fabric? The spine protector from the same altarpiece would...

The canvas commonly available at hardware stores as drop cloths is typically not of great quality---IMHO. I'd avoid using it for any hard-wearing garment. Making a jack is a LOT of work, even if you fake it like I did. Please don't waste all that time and labor on substandard materials!

Note that the Scythians are depicted wearing this same exact jacket some thousand years or so earlier. Interesting, eh?

...Armour or not, your average Viking doesn't intend getting hit. If he gets badly hit, he doesn't mind dying, if it's in Glory... So why did they wear armour at all? Expensive armour at that? No, your logic does not follow. They must've wore maille armour because it worked, because it was effectiv...

Indeed!

Go Scythian...plenty of evidence for scale EVERYTHING! And there is extant evidence for Scythian use of leather scale (as well as bronze and iron).

I have a front-opening corrazina kit I bought from William Avery. It's not the Global Effects kit. If you are interested, I still have it and could part with it for $125 + shipping.

It occurs over and over again in 15th century paintings, IIRC---not specifically on shoes though. I'd have to look to see if indeed there are any paintings from that same period that show shoes are tied. The virtue of 15th century art is that there is a pervasive level of realistic detail where one ...

The Romans (I think it's written in Tacitus) explained how the Gauls were oh-so manly except for their clothing. Namely their feminine trousers... Huh? Say what? Are you sure about that? If you will allow knee britches and even briefer "legged" garments to fall under the scope of "pants" then one would have to say that pants become "de rigeur" in Western European culture during the last 3/4 of the 16th century. You have sailor's sloppes, Venetian sloppes, and trunk hose (which are a...

I have seen what seem to be "tuck" quilted instead of the familiar line-stitch quilted (into channels or grids) in the photos of Gerry Embleton's group (in The Medieval SOldier book), and I seem to remember seeing the same in some of EMbleton's sketches. Tuck quilting is certainly less laborious. Wh...

Good news! You CAN wear a modern kilt in the SCA. In order to have such a fashion accepted though, you'll have to add a rigorous list of items. Are you ready for such a committment? You'll also need: ⋅ A bousy pirate shirt ⋅ A pair of knee-high Minnetonka fringed suede moccasin b...
