DOH!!! Must I eat my words? <laugh> That sketch makes me recall that my favorite reconstruction has a horse hair tassel! <Note to self: Open mouth, insert foot> Bwahahahahaha! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/finkas/ScythianHarness-1.jpg I have seen the archeological remains that inspired the a...

Hold on now...I got the distict feeling the original thread that this was based on (now deleted?) was talking about a horse tail, tanned in one piece, fastened to the top of a helmet like the simplification/bastardization of a Greek/Roman comb-type crest. I was lead to this supposition by the origin...

Oh, me too, Syr Fynn. I admit that in my early Ren Faire days I also had those front-lacing knee boots, and the ankle high boots too. Mind you, I cut the fringe off to make them appear less egregious. Alone, perhaps the Minnetonka mocs are not so bad---but the combo of all those aforementioned eleme...

Since when has that stopped people from wearing modern kilts? Hehe. Yup. And they typically wear those modern kilts with fringe-top Minnetonka mocassin boots, a 1970's-era girl's mexican leather purse (conplete with twist lock hasp), a cotton gauze peasant shirt with brass eyelets and leather cord ...

Interesting discussion, but would not James II and Captain Kidd seem to be moot to the original question since both are post 1600 (the historical cut-off date for the SCA)? I believe Dredge implied that he is interested in this topic as it applies to assembling a harness that can be used in SCA hea...

Actually it does not sound unreasonable when you consider that the scale-happy Scythians shod shields in iron scales on occasion. That bent oval thing covering the shoulders in the display photo'd below is a shield covered in iron scales. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/finkas/ScythianHarness-...

The Worth Company has brass but not bronze. They are a manufacturer of spinners and may be your best price. They will custom make scales but you'll need to order 10 thousand in order to make it cost effective. BTW: That site that Black Thumb just listed looks to be a reseller, not a manufacturer (A...

Windrose is great. I like White Mountain Armory too (and I own 2 of them). Both Dirk Lancaster (Dirk's Metal Works) and his brother Brand (The Armor Store?) are making some very clean bargrilled helmets. AB Hammer is also making some clean bargrills. I am sure there are more very good armorers makin...

I am thinking of gifting that king with a really nice recreation of a belt of bells---in a style proper to his personna period. It would cost me a couple of hundred dollars to produce but it might be a fun gesture. The idea is that the rat (erstwhile, me) bells the cat (the King) in order to get war...

...doesnt that hinder flexability? ... AFAIK the joints should either have a thinner area (i.e. less layers) on the inside, or may even be cut away leaving a slit or hole. I believe that's what some of the paintings show. For instructions, try checking out this link: m Cheers, Tim --- Oh yeah, here...

Thanks. Yep it's 2 piece plus a band of hand-woven tape. You see, I forgot my new hat a few years back when my pals and I visited the Estrella War. Man was I bummed! I immediately hit the Merchant's row and bought a chunk of wool and a length of trim, went back to camp, and created that hat. I took ...

Thanks, Dante. You might suspect the demi gauntlets would in fact get in the way or cut the string but they have not thus far. Ha! This time I had my camera nearby and talked a spectator into snapping my photo. Here I am before the Broken Field Battle (see attachment below). Thanks for all your words of advice and validation of my acts. I will take them to heart.
