Well things are still somewhat chaotic at work but not so chaotic that I can't arrange Friday off. As I'm staying in Cary about 45 min east of Wades I'd prefer to have my own car. Browin, If you can make it down near Philly Thursday night you are welcome to crash in the guest bedroom and we can head...

Re: Breastplates and arm mobility

I was told that if you can cup your hand over the opposite elbow then you have a perdios breastplate to a little narrow. SCAdians like having narrower because armor doesn't actually protect your life, just prevents the occasional pain so there is a different optimum point for coverage vs mobility. S...

A 21x15 oval only requires a 6' ridge. You don't need a 2x6 for that. Also the taller you make the ridge, the more leverage you put on your pins at the top of your uprights. My 21x13 slant-wall oval is a spoked construction and it uses octaganol 4x4's that are shouldered down for a sleeve at the sam...

Re: Making compound curves with Leather?

I'm going to agree that a new gorget the proper size is easier to build then the add-on pieces. You can skip riveting the halves together which is at least 4 rivets per side if you want a good connection. Cut a paper or cardboard pattern (without folds) first as it is very cheap. Cut your padding ne...

Useless zen answer here: "It's as much longer as it needs to be" or more useful: "Figure out where you want the armor to start and stop and then have someone measure your back over arming clothes". I've done a number of corazinna kits but it's not a fixed number or even fixed ratio. Some people have...

What is your travel schedule like? Taking Friday to drive down? Do you want to stop near Philly Thursday night, hit the guest room and split gas the rest of the way? I don't mind driving the distance if your car can get you at least this far.

Re: 17-4 Ph and 17-7 Ph Stainless Steel for Armour

For a concrete example, many people use 16 Ga 304 for knee cops. This material has a yield of 42 ksi and an ultimate strength of 90 ksi. To get the same "ultimate" strength using the 17-7 with a 1050 temper (with a yield of 200 ksi) we would need to use 1/5 the thickness. I don't think that anyone ...

The point that I really should make is that there is more to selecting the plate thickness than just dent resistance. IMO, plates made from 22ga./0.031" 17-4ph or full hard 301 stainless steel are too flexible for ACL/BotN bugurt / group combat. It doesn't help you if the plate is undamaged, but yo...

Stainless rivets suck but I've used them as necessary. Yes the tape stunt will work. just peen right through the tape and peel it off afterwards. The rivet will cut/burn its way out the center. It helps if you can keep the rivet perfectly upright and not slide around on the anvil. For upright make c...
