Re: Making a DelTin Thoughter
There are apparently at least two "levels" of Del Tin. Most of them are good looking mass assembled wall hanger. A small percentage of it, is good quality sword. Here, in Italy, where in theory Del Tins should be produced, nobody in the reenactment community use them. Expensive like hell, and not us...

Re: Making a DelTin Thoughter
Stupid should hurt.
Who told your friend that a Del Tin was a sword for use? They are wall hangers.
The sword must return on the wall, tell your friend to stop messing with stuff and buy a sturdy sword.

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea
I google-translate the article, well, at the time, (if I remember correctly) "tournaments" had more the look of real battles, fought in a quite vast area that could include villages, woods and open lands. Knight took part in them with their troops, infantry and archers were involved. Captured knight...

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea
And sometimes they didnt deal with it well. At the tournament at Neuss (Germany) in 1241, over eighty knights are said to have died, having suffocated in their helmets from the heat and dust. I think they liked to launch major military ventures in the cooler months when possible. Plate armour is ve...

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea
Oh surely people were much more in "contact" with the environment, today we are too much insulated, we live permanently in a egg shell. We have air conditioned in our cars, homes, offices, in every single place, we control the temperature and the moisture everywhere. It's honestly crazy. They would ...

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea
Climate change (oh nooo!) is surely one of the factors, other factors have been already underlined: I live in Italy, and usually reenactment time goes from April to October, the peak of activities is in the hottest months. In all those years this is some of the observation I've made on the issue: 1)...

I hope soon to be able to start making some armour again. You don't know how useful to me are your horror stories.
I will try to remind each one of them, and to learn the hard learned lessons without burning my ass on them.

I know that it's fantasy artwork, but don't you find a bit strange to have the armpit rondel on the right and not on the left while you clearly depicted the left side more protected? I would put it on the left, if you don't plan to have two.

Re: The authenticity paradox
As I use to say to the guys in my group, recreation, reenactment, living history, experimental archeology, all have a somewhat limited scope, and they make compromises to achieve their goal. Smaller is the goal, easier is to satisfy more stringent parameters. Obviously it's impossible by definition ...

I've made a pair of splinted arms in my life, and I made splints with 1mm mild steel, and shaped them to a sort of "M" section the central part was like ( and not < , but the concept is that. They were light and sturdy, yes they suffered some damage, but I think that using a spring material could ma...

If the armourer know it's part of the job, and if you have done your homework correctly (taking your measurements) then proper padding will permit you to achieve the optimal compromise between comfort, safety and visibility.

About the first beaker, I notice a darker spike in the bottom part, looks like a very pronounced shape that even wine bottles have. I dare to speculate that this shape served to fit the beaker over the spike of the chandelier. If you think about it, it make quite some sense to be able to use a oil l...

I think it could be very dangerous to be unable to drop the weapon. It's like putting a lever in your hand that can break your wrist and elbow in the event of some freak fall or something like that.

ThriftyKnight I think you have to study BOTN more, your vision of it is quite superficial. At BOTN you can't do advanced grappling techniques, because it's a competitive tournament, there are money for prize, and there is a lot for pride. If fighters would be in the position to hurt someone, they wi...

No matter how strong it will be, it will dent. How much it will dent is what you can influence with thickness and hardness, but you have to think where is the right compromise between production effort and durability.
