Re: Where to go in Rome.

Only 7 days? That's so little time. Unfortunately I can't help you too much with Rome and Venice, as are cities that I don't know very much. For sure in Venice there is Doge's Palace, as already told. But Venice is entirely wonderful (beware that in this period high tides are common, bring rubber bo...

Re: Preventing / minimizing scale during heat treating?

You basically need to have a slighty reducing atmosphere instead of an oxidizing one. What does it mean? That if you heat treat with a flame, the mixture need to be rich instead of lean. In this way, the combustion will consume all the oxigen, and there will be none to oxidize the metal. If your kil...

Re: Hardening mail.

I planned to do that process on my riveted maille, but I've not done it for two simple reasons: 1) My maille is half finished, and need at least another 150 hours of work. 2) At 300 Hours of work the fear of a epic fail and the loss of the maille is a little too much considering that my life is not ...

Re: Battle of Hastings burial site

I don't see an offset of the place of 1 mile as an issue in the medieval mind. I think the idea of the construction is more important that it's precise location. From what I read in the article the piece of land where the battle has been fought appear to be much more steep, maybe someone decided tha...

Re: Sword Test day 3

Well, there are two things that I would like to see (if I can dare to ask). 1) When we see cutting exercises, we usually see people try to deliver the strongest blow possible, while, in actual combat, the chance to perform such blows are certainly less than the quantity of "smaller" cuts that two fi...

Well, I think that the gauntlets are completely wrong, and they even mount the greaves on the wrong legs... but I may close one eyes over it. I don't think there is any kind of pauldron on this armour, there should not be, and I can't see any trace of them. I would vote the reproduction with a 7, co...

What I find interesting in the painting is the wear texture of parts of the gambeson. It is very similar to the damages our gambeson have after few years (the outer layer wears out exposing the layer below.

I don't think a task like that would be taken on the shoulder of the last of the helpers without the involvment of the master. A new frontier of museum visiting?

http://www.123dapp.com/catch http://www.agisoft.ru/products/photoscan In 2004 I had the chance to visit the Stibbert Museum to make a research over a famous XIV° century visor. Being a kind of nerd in love with 3D, I took the chance to take as many picture as I could of the piece, and make a 3D vers...

Yes I remember tinned maille, but I've never seen helmets or other parts different from brigantine plates. Do you have some pictures or indications where those pieces are? We may assume they have been tinned in their service time, or there is a chance they have been tinned later? There are some writ...

Re: Jacopo Cavalli and pointing 14th c Italian arm harness

I would find more plausible, and appealing, that the maille aventail of his bascinet wrapped around his upper arms and torso to offer a seamless protection to one of the most exposed area of the body: armpits, neck, shoulders. This construction would be entirely possible and not even a lot complicat...

Re: advice on full armour combat needed

Thank you Gaston for your kind words! What drove our armour design, was our intent to reenact a kind of fighting that relied on thrusts a lot, I was worried by neck and face protection, and we decided for this design, we lenghtened a bit the faulds too to cover entirely the torso, achieving a bit of...

Re: Sewing a Gambeson - Pattern question

The shoulders are too wide, I would halve that lenght, in this way you will be able to raise your arms without pulling up the gambeson. The back centerline should be shaped too. Remember that Basic Armouring PDF is quite old, thus the information within could be a little outdated. I suggest to switc...

Oh that U.F.O. thing is interesting. Gaston, we made the visor in this way because we need to be able to thrust with reenactment grade weapons with safety. And they where used for foot combat too.

advice on full armour combat needed

This weekend we fielded for the first time our new two suits of armour, they are field harnesses with great bascinets.
