possibly.... Bigest reason I considered it is that I burned the crap out of my hand the other day after hot dishing a pair of helmet bowls, tossed the hammer in the rack, came back half hour later grabbed the head of the dishing hammer, and dropped it RIGHT quick. Basicly I've decided what I want ou...

From what I recall, to anneal H-13 you start it at about 'critical' and drop the temp by 100 degrees every couple hours. Then burry it in sand when you get it near the 900 degree mark. I'd have to check my references to be sure. But from what I recall it pretty much takes the betterpart of a few day...

Hal, Do you own the smaller harobor freight torch, the plumbers torch? Are the fittings the same as the larger one? I've been wondering, and thinking about picking one up, but don't want to have to feed it off of the stupid little bottles, and would much rather run it off of my forge tanks. I'd like...

Working with air hardening steels specificly H-13

Anyone have any experience with this? Recently I've been thinking about what I want out of a dishing hammer, and the reality is I'm probably going to have to make it or have it made. I'm thinking about H-13 because I understand that it is "teh r0x0r$" for hot work tools, and I intend to use it for h...

It's way late in period, but there comes a point where it almost seems that looking cool is more important than being armored....

You will probably not get a full on anneal with just the torch. I think that even mild steel takes a bit slower cooling to get a full anneal. I usualy toss stuff in the forge, get it up to heat, then turn the burners off, letting it cool down with the firebrick/refractory inside the still hot forge....

Eyvandr, I personaly don't want to get into that line of thought. I have enough unfinished projects laying around taking up space, I certainly don't need to keep the finished ones too. Late period vs. early period strikes me like this. I drive a beat up little pickup. It gets me where I need to go. ...

If you are going to cross over into some of the Live Steel groups, they do not accept stainless. I had a guy who had to return his entire kit and order it in steel because he failed to ask them what he needed. I don't know that it would so much be a 'live steel' vs. 'living history'. Stainless look...

Designs inherent to the helmet? None. As mentioned previously, a burgonet is nicely suited to helping HIDE it. A visored sugarloaf might do it, with some careful adjusting. Maybe a kettle hat. You can do it with just about anything. It's just going to be a lot more noticable on some styles. I would ...

depends on who you ask. Stainless work hardens more than mild. A lot more. That's not really why I'd ever get it. Work hardening is... unreliable in my opinion.
