I bet if you call the original shop back and ask them for the price on a full sheet it's a lot less than $10/SF. Like Clang said, they're cutting a full sheet to your purpose. They're charging you a cut fee, which is typical. Runs me about $10 a cut at my shop. If the lady behind the counter is in a...

Thanks, Marco. I'll let you know when I decide. I'm leaning towards 3/32" hole and 33% open. But I may do a mock-up in some unperforated steel just so I can test the look and fit first before investing the money and to make sure I don't have to do the cuts twice. (Perf is not cheap as you well...

For what it's worth, a lot of the tandy stuff is available in brass/bronze.

The majority of their shiny 'white' metal buckles that I have used are actualy nickel plated brass/bronze.

In regard to Ashcraft Baker. This is the first I've heard of them being ill-fitting. I've always heard they're are very durable and ugly. Can others confirm or deny that they're ill-fitting? They run round. Perfectly round. Heads are not. Best case scenario someone has a fairly round head, less ova...

They are a decent tool at a decent price. By most accounts it appears that they have been working to fix some of the issues that plauged earlier models. It has been common to hear that they really don't need as much fiddling with to get them working. I've had 2 sets of blades on mine, and found them...

They are referring to helmets produced by Ashcraft/Baker. They tend to be sturdy enough, but ill fitting on pretty much anyone and ugly as sin that has been beat by an ugly stick smeared with dog mess.

Any constructive criticism welcome, along with general opinions, suggestions and the like. Looks cool as hell. Nicely done. In the last picture the metacarpal section you have laid out looks a bit long proportionaly. I'm not there, I can't see it fit on you (or whoever it's for). But it looks long....

Probably stupid anvil question...

But someone may have tried it, and help me overcome some of the possible pitfalls. I have a nice anvil. She's my mistress. I love her more than the wife, but not more than the kids. I also have a pair of harbor freight 55 lb anvils. One of them sits on the bench and gets used mostly for a welding cl...

Very very nice... the only thing I would suggest for future SCA builds is to watch how far the grill comes away from the chin area. The way that helm looks in those pictures I could easily get a stick up under the chin. As it stands I don't think this helm would be passed by a marshal. Which would ...

I really like the late 15th c hinges. The last of the 'simple' ones.

The way the edge is beveled like it is really sets it apart from just a chunk of strap steel.

Very nice.

I've been looking through pictures of similar helms and I don't even see a rivet for a chinstrap on a lot of them. Let us know how the chains fight too. Have contemplated this for a while. Should easily meet any lanyard requirements, and if done properly, not be an additional hazzard. But finding the 'right' length of chain seems daunting.

If it's not a trade secret, what is your hardening technique?

More to the point...

Are you using a process that actually hardens the leather? or do you use a wax/resin impregnation technique?
