I edited your picture just a teeny bit. http://members.armourarchive.org/mattmaus/hammerding.jpg I could be wrong. I'm just going off of what I see in the pictures. This looks like a deep hammer mark to me. Far deeper than I would personally care to try to sand out. Instead, I would lay that portion...

I will try reducing the size of my outward rolls like you mentioned, I normally made them pretty large to act as a stoprib but find that they catch on the pauldrons alot when the arms are moved. How far in do you scribe a line for your outside rolls? Make your rolls whatever size you like. When I m...

You asked for critique, so here it is. I think you started sanding/grinding too soon. I think you need more hammers. I think we all need more stakes. There are some really noticable hammer marks in the piece. It appears that you are trying to grind them out. Genneraly speaking, I find it much easier...

For repro work... I think a lot of it depends on your own tastes too. The historical dating of rolls is and which way they went is a pretty nit picky detail. That's not to say it should be ignored. Which way looks better when you're done? Looks like crap one way or the other, go with the way that lo...

Tri-corn hat
Thinking about 20 projects ahead... maybe less... flakey muse has abandoned me in the midle of several things just at the moment. A tricorn hat. Assume multi part construction (as... it's not really going to be a hat per-se). The brim. If I start with a flat circle, divide that into 3rds, and then p...

To be honest, I trust open cell a lot more than close cell for protecting my noodle. I can take a rubber mallet and bang my head with the open cell and not even bat an eyelash. I know I get hit, but no pain. I cant say that with closecell. It hurts, when I do that test. That green army camp pad stu...

That is one sweet helmet. I'll be in my bunk. Thanks. Here's an idea... BUY it from me, and you can take it to your bunk with you. What grownups do behind closed doors with their helmets isn't any of my bidness! Unreal! On the contrary, it is quite real, and has a very nice tactile quality to it Da...

Stupid question of the hour that just now popped into my head. I know that with my experiments with acid etching various stuff, ambient/air temp, and the temp of my etch can play a big part in it. Warming Ferric chloride up to over 100 and I think he said close to 200 F before trying to etch with it...

FWIW I have parts that will not ble blackened too. In the past I have used petrolium jelly as a 'resist'. After the black parts are black, I push that off and use it to oil the black parts. Seemed to work good. Makes sense that wd-40 doesn't work so good. It's not just oil, but solvents and stuff too.

Jackie, It's a bitchin hat. I'm going to pick nits a bit though. The nose looks a little to flat to me. Even for a neked skull. This may be because it is. It may be because of the eyes. I don't care for the eyes. They are doubtless as thin as they are because of SCA regs. It is my opinion that somet...

Your Low skill/High Skill diatribe is nonsensical. I'm sorry but Cutting correctly takes real skill; peening properly takes real skill, buffing is an art...not a low-end job. Cool helm ala McBible style. I would have to call it a crusaders helm. Have you used an air file before? They work quite well for that application. In addition to the dremel tool... a wining combination. Hal PS: Did you cut a PacMan shape and weld for the top? ie a pie shape cut out. Yep. I cut and...

Some helmets have an excellent resale value. I have even seen folks get more for a used helm than they paid new. I know for sure that 2 of mine re-sold for more than I charged originaly. That may well be because I've always sold myself short. In one case it was less 'used' and more 'second hand' be...

Re: HOwdy
Hi Mattmaus, Hey where did you get the stake to the right of the helm at? The short fat cone was a 'thing' that I found in a scrap yard. I assume that it is some kind of loose fitting cap. Originaly it was less pointy and had a 1.5-2" diameter blunted nose on it. I welded a small ball bearing ...

Uh, and I don't make glue-covered shields. The plywood blanks are triple birch, the canvas is thick drop-cloth quality, and the whole thing is coated with FIVE layers of System Three epoxy- and then primered and hand scraped. I know. But it makes the point fairly sucinctly. About as sucinctly as a ...
