3/16th will work fine. There will be some overlap of the scales. Are you doing SCA or what, if so look up Centurion Tarquin. He does Japanese stuff and should be able to help you out. He is the regional knight marshal so he should be easy to find. Good luck and it is smooth and shiny side out.

Knuut pretty much hits it on the nose. If you ask for 16 gauge you can anything down to .058 if I remember right. Manufacturers are allowed a certain tolerance. Going to agree with all the above. As long as you use about 1/8" plastic with padding you should be ok. The choice (once it is anounced by the Earl Marshal) of wearing will be yours. Depends on how much you like your arms. Me, myself I will still wear them.
