Re: Critique/feedback/advice sought.
Your Highness, I would recommend some work on your footwork, as you seemed in some cases to cross yourself up a bit trying to move on angles rather than straight in and out. As has been noted, your movement is more straight in and out than is desirable (so is mine ). I noticed you using the high fac...

Oops- sorry Your Highness, I did realize You were Royalty. Why should that matter? HRH Robert has asked us to critique his fighting and advise on things we see he might improve upon. Our advise is not unsolicited. In fact it is our noble responsibility to help as a Royal Noble asked for our help. o...

The other Crown has the right to toss you off the site, and your Crown can carpool with you back to your kingdom. When you are a guest in a kingdom, be nice to that kingdom. I had a half-inch plywood shield edged with aluminum U-channel covered in leather that held up for years and was, in fact, still being used after the plywood had cracked clear through. The U-channel held it together, even though the whole thing would bow if you held it out by the edges The second pl...

Re: Rapid rivets for mock up patterns.
But to the original post... Why did you use rapid rivets? they you need a tool to mess around with removing them. Small machine screws are much more convenient (IMHO) but I have also seen people use those paper fastners that flatten and look like propellers for pieces that are larger then gauntlets...

You keep saying HIGH walls for a bridge. I don't think anyone is advocating high walls for a bridge. Look at this pic. The left structure is a Lilies War fort, the right a Lilies War Bridge. Do you consider 3ft to high for a bridge? As to look, I can't agree, I think wooden walls is still better lo...

Re: covering a globose breastplate with leather
To cover a breastplate you would probably be best served using an upholstery weight leather (on the order of 2-3 oz) in a chrome tannage. Any upholstery leather you will find is going to be chrome tanned these days, so don't worry too much about that part. At that weight, the leather will be pretty ...

Re: Possible replacement for hay bales
Storage should not be a problem. As I understand it, there are 4 semi-trailers for Pennsic storage, and we could always get a 5th one. Transportation shouldn't be much of an issue, assuming they are not very heavy. At 100# per 4' seems like a lot of weight to move, especially during the week betwee...

Re: Possible replacement for hay bales
Sean, perhaps you missed my further musings that there might be a source for "used" barriers and that such should be explored. I think the cloth cover would look pretty hideous, personally. Trailer would run app. $120 per year but I think it would be more likely that we would store them on...

Lemme see. A heavy fighter, a duke, states "A" occurred, an archer, a female, states "B" occurred. The Marshal's Court decided in favour of the "B" statement. SCA war is a full-contact martial activity, with to be expected "full-contact" hard play. Suck it up...

Interesting, Sigifrith. OTOH, I definitely did witness someone deliberately tackle another fighter in the course of the thi...

Been thinking about this one for a bit. I'm going to go with my most impactful Pennsic moment, but I can't call it "favorite". At Mac Cooper's memorial service in front of the fortress, after HG Talymar and I had spoken a few words, I went over and knelt before Her Excellency Betty Cooper,...

Looking at some of the options on that page, the "stackable barriers" and the "water filled safety barricade" look like they have some potential. Still, we're looking at $40 per linear foot for the stackable and $20 /lf for the "safety barricade". I would suggest the &...

Practitioners of Kali and escrima have been doing this for ever. They also leave one end free so that it moves very erratically when you strike it. Makes for very dynamic training. Interesting. I can only think that a free end would lead to something beyond "dynamic" with typical SCA stri...

Re: Carnauba vs. Paraffin for hardened leather?
The hardening SHOULD be permanent. But if you used sole bends, I guess in theory insufficient penetration might have left parts able to soften. There are a couple of factors that come into play. One, it's almost impossible to completely waterproof leather, so given sufficient exposure, you're going...

Re: Carnauba vs. Paraffin for hardened leather?
A quick note here: It only takes like, 30 seconds for leather to get totally wet, there's no need to soak it overnight. Sorry, but that's simply not true Depends on the thickness of your leather, among other things. You can dampen the surface almost instantly, just dip in water, bang. Surface is da...

Do we need to bury the posts? At estrella (and an EK war event) they used boards to mark the bridges. (2x4 or 2xsomething) If we accept that a 2x4 on the ground is not much of a hazard, what about using them as 'legs' to keep a post upright. For example take an upright post, and attach an 18" ...
