I did, at about four years in.. Almost all of the bodies who knew the first name have been buried, so to speak

Re: Attack or wait?
Standing and waiting or even running away (= moving backwards) is the technique of cowards. It leads to a weak mind and bad fighting spirit. And it has no honour. Maybe the coward hits earlier than the active fighter. But such victories are worthless. An active fighter may lose a fight but it stren...

My only concern would be about the top staying put. If you bump it wrong, the top could jump out of the leg holes/grooves. Perhaps make the grooves/holes a layer deeper? I've used something similar, probably even less secure than Asbrand's design, if anything, for many years. The top bouncing off h...

As a spectator, certainly. The long still pauses come across like a chess match, in which both combattants are playing out in their heads every conceivable variation of attack and defense that might happen between them. It also comes across timid, as though they're thinking, "If I jump in and ...

Two observations. If you bake the leather at about 180 farenheit you won't need to do the hot wax treatment, it will have hardened already. Two, you should dye before you bake, as the absorption of dye is dramatically different after baking. Can give some cool effects, but I can pretty much guarante...

By nature I'm a counter-puncher. In my fighting I am whatever I believe will win me the fight. You can always use a lanyard on the wedges. I'm inclined to agree with Chris. My first thought on looking at your design was that the "hooks" were a weak point that is likely to fail. Otherwise, looks great. I've used a generally similar set up for many, many years and it has held up well....

Only knee injury I've had happened in the dojo practicing a jump spinning back kick. (don't land still rotating).

Thomas, I'm OK with smartassed snarking, it's entertaining. Do what you feel. if the wrastlin guy won't take a hint then I think we just have to put up with it. Oddly enough, shoes are not "one size fits all". Lots of options work for hiding modern shoes, from sabatons to mail covers to leather tops that mimic a period shoe. Side note - turn shoes are only appropriate for part of the SCA period. Worn with the wrong outfit they should be no less ja...

Copper rivets would be very out of place on spalders. I would second Pitbull's suggestion of the roofing nails. Flat head on the inside, pien the shank on the outside. Domed rivets you want to set using something like a tin block on your larger anvil. The rivet dome will push into the softer tin, bu...
