Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"

Continuing the rinoing analogy, there comes a point when it's blatant enough that the marshal in charge, crown, the chiv/white scarves or someone else finds the biggest, hardest hitting dude they can and instructs them to hit them with a 10 and tell em "stop it" Do you have any idea how i...

And make sure, on the field of battle, you act the same way as you do here. See someone wearing hockey gloves or soccer knee pads... MAKE SURE YOU GO UP TO THEM, WITH YOUR CONDESCENSION. DO IT. BE IT. 100%. BE TRUE ALWAYS TO WHO YOU ARE. Why is there always the threat of physical violence? It was l...

Sorry, failure to comprehend. It's really out of line to dictate that other people may not participate because they don't meet your personal standard of commitment to that specific area of activity. If because of their lack of commitment they don't meet the standards of the organization (currently ...

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"

There's that good ole SCA elitist attitude...was wondering where it went. This actually makes sense...it truly IS about how much you make and how much you can spend, nevermind that everyone is there for the same reason- to have a good time. Or one would think. So your saying I should run up my CCs ...

I also agree that the SCA isn't exactly what some of the more period enthusiasts are after but what I think keeps them is not only the friends they make but the possibility of recognition and earned reward or title. The possibility of being king or holding an important office might be a contributin...

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"

Why can't the Big Tent accommodate rebated steel, at some point? The SCA has fencing and cut & thrust seems to be expanding. Not to mention A&S classes in period fighting. I think we might get there eventually. I think it is entirely probable that we will get there eventually, but likely no...

I meant that sincerely. A prize not related to the prowess of the individual but by how accurate the kit is. Have some...

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"

I think, from the little I read, it sounds like there are more or less two camps here...those looking for more historical accuracy (that'll always be called into question so long as you use rattan instead of steel weapons, but that's just my take on it) and those who are looking to be all-inclusive...

(OK, I just thought of something. I think this is an excellent idea, especially for kits w...

Actually the stuff I mentioned are things I've heard that bother a lot of people here. Tennis shoes, jeans and plastic being the ones I remembered right off the top of my head. I don't wear tennis shoes, jeans and I have no visible plastic anywhere. So I guess I'm following the rules. If there was ...

Get a pair of vice-grips. Hold your stamps and drive punches with the grips, not with your fingers... and then maybe you'll avoid the kind of tendonitis that's keeping me from doing more leatherwork. I'm really sorry to hear about your tendonitis, but I can't endorse the vise-grips suggestion. Usin...

There's no start date. My comment was what I've heard about people adding a 100 years on to up it to the 1700s. Raito do we really know if there isn't agreement? Has there been that much done in the way of surveys for the fighters? I'd thing it would be a majority rules sort of thing. That way ever...

Gavin - we do the encampment piece very successfully here in An Tir and it looks really nice. If you want to be in that part of the encampment you've got to have period stuff. As long as our only membership requirement is a heartbeat and a "self defined attempt" we will never have a medieval look. The best step we can take I think is to define our rules beyond a hazily worded "attempt" and actually enforce the rules that already exist. While I agree w...

We already separate encampments from period/non-period so fighters shouldn't be that difficult. The biggest thing is to set specific guidelines on what is and isn't acceptable. Tennis shoes, plastic, hose rimmed shields, street sign shields - whatever. "We" do? Consider that this is an ex...

On the belts in the initial post, the thing that jars me is not the buckles on either, but the copper rivets. They seem dramatically out of place relative to everything else about both belts. As for what to make, which market(s) to target, etc. - there are people who are paid very large sums of mone...

When I was at the Metalworking Symposium a number of years ago, a guy who demonstrated paleo/neolithic skills gave a demo on 12 ways to start a fire, which included the fire piston. Yeah, that. Hide the "anachronistic gorget" by putting an aventail on a barrel helm? I'm not familiar with barrel helms having aventails, so that seems like picking and choosing which anachronism to go with The pictures don't look like there is a serious problem, but they also don't show ...
