Re: Recruiting in Toxic Environments

I made the mistake of encouraging a bunch of new folks to volunteer at a war one year. The women all decided to help with the childrens office. 4 of them came back crying and the other two were totally PO'd. One of the husbands had to be talked down. Not a good scene. I had no idea. My kids were ne...

Re: Recruiting in Toxic Environments

How can you tell when an environment is about to go toxic? Strong factionalization, to the detriment of the group. Officers who tenaciously hold to power, even to the point of making it impossible to get "new folks" into jobs, because they refuse to relinquish power, and will only give it...

Glaukos, it sounds like a flat snap with movement. Paul uses it for closing into effective range under cover, attacking the corners and I don't know what all else Can be done stepping straight forward, or on an angle to either side, and with either foot stepping. Try standing on one foot in front of...

On a related note, are these legal for SCA use? They are latex covered foam over a 1" rattan core. My guess is not legal, but I wanted to make sure. http://historicenterprises.com/bmz_cache/7/748a305fda8dc1be3c82cd9481d92704.image.232x550.jpg And my answer is that they don't meet our rules, as...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

I suppose one needs a definition of "movement" for a discussion like this. It's certainly true that there are some people who don't care what your plastic looks like or where it is (visible or not), they just don't think you should be wearing plastic. Whether a diffuse group of individuals...

Your Grace, there's a meaningful difference between a full on cross check and the kind of strike you are referencing. And yeah, I understand that strike better than the average bear. I grew up fighting HG Vissevald on a regular basis But, for all the power that is in that kind of strike, it does not...

Re: The science of Swords

What you call percussion point is something of interest only in SCA game, it has very little importance in swords developed to deliver slicing cuts and thrusts. Especially if those are dueling swords (kind like) the purpose is not to chop arms and legs, but just to draw blood. And for this you don'...

Well, yeah, you can be. But the question really being asked here is not "can you be" but "are you".

A kingdom ruling that says you cannot grasp the blade is a kingdom ruling that halfswording is not done in that kingdom. The historic truth of the matter certainly appears to be that people grabbed their own blades to engage in halfswording (and even grabbed their opponents' blades but we'll pass on...

Interesting division. Are we looking for people who put on armour when they arrive at the event, fight until that's over, change into their modern clothes and go home? (I hope they go home, rather than just hanging out in modern clothes at what is supposed to be a medieval affair) Or are we looking ...

Around 150 and 155 there's a fellow in a gambeson wielding a falchion - holding, and striking, with the blade reversed in his hand. At least, in all my thoughts about how one of those would work, he's holding it with the blade turned front to back. Strikes me as very odd. I didn't see any brigandines.

The rules are clear that any two handed weapon may be yielded with 1 hand. Any weapon over 48" is considered a 2 handed weapon. Sure, put butt spikes on them as long as they are over 48" and under 7'6". (unless your KEM says no.) I'm assuming that "yielded" above was meant ...

Re: Critique my fighting - video on Facebook

What strikes me, and it applies to both fighters in the video, is that you appear to hold your swords in a position to defend against offside or left handed attacks and then attempt to strike from there. This initial hand position makes it very challenging to get any body action (hips, abs, shoulder...

The point about C. Manan isn't that it's the only kind allowed for SCA (because our rules make no species identification and as a group we've been woefully ignorant about what the heck "rattan" actually is for most of our 40+ year history;)) but rather that it's one of the most exported an...
