I got some fan mail, photo I never saw...

I got sent some fan mail from a Star Trek fan, from an episode of TNG I did. I had never seen this photo before. The helmet and cuirass is Luther Anshelm, the arms and legs Jeff Hedgecock. Unfortunately the Barbute was stolen down in Mexico on a job and we never got it back. I really want another li...

I'm flattered, but I certainly do not belong in the "World’s best armourers" list. Perhaps an inspirational guy, but I do not do enough of this work to qualify for such a list.

Yes that is a concern. I changed plans mid build. My intention originally was to just low fire it by burning out the wood frame core and not firing the outside. But then I had the bright idea of decorating the outside. So yesterday I removed the wood framing and added another 3/4" layer to the ...

Thanks. I know 1 1/2" is not very thick. As I have added decoration it is likely 3" in some areas and closer to 2"- 2 1/2" in most places. I am hoping that it will be enough. I read one article where a fellow made an oven from a terra cotta pot and it worked well for him. (That c...

It's two slab layers with a bit of hemp between. The wall is a minimum of 1 1/2" thick. A little thin for a full on oven, but for a portable one I think it will be thick enough. I'm a little concerned about cracking, but I think with a slow dry I'll be OK. I am toying with firering it with a wo...

Making a "Black oven" (Updated) Finished

I am building a "black oven" (modernly known as a wood fire pizza oven) I started this for Estrella last year, but didn't get to it. I went back and thickened the interior. It is based on a heraldic dolphin. (fish not mammal) Currently it is 380 lbs of terra cotta clay. Once it is fired it...

I was looking at these kits as well. I'm glad I didn't buy one. It sounds like almost the same amount of work to just get raw stock and build your own. This is what I started instead of buying one of those kits. (Mainly because I wanted a self-spanning lock) http://www.globaleffects.com/Temp/wheello...

I planned on a couple of new garments for Pennsic, but as usual, I managed to only get one complete. For my Viking persona I’m setting him in southern Finland (modern Helsinki) as a trader of goods. So I am combining some styles from east and west, north and south of that area. http://www.globalef...

For me, that’s the hardest part. I cut a strip of .030" brass, anneal it, and then draw it through a series of progressively smaller holes in a draw plate to make a tube. (In this case the tube is about 0.340â€

That is an artifact of the difference the way the site loads "multiple views" of an item and "single view" of an item. Since the site only loads the new picture in a single view, there is no change. But, it reloads the whole page when a multiple view comes up and bounces you back...

[quote="es02Is the tip from Quiet Press? How did you get it to attach? (ditto for the bands about half way up as they look too far along to get a rivet done properly.) clinch nails?[/quote]

Cutting ABS and Kydex, you just need a utility knife or XActo and you score it and snap it. I do this with up to 1/4" material. Then use the knife held firmly at 90 degrees and square to the edge, to scrap the edges smooth.

Thanks, es02 , Yes in a way. The original helmets use a bronze matrix to work the foils over. (I do not know material thickness on the originals) For my helm and the horn, the matrix is an etched plate, then pressed with about 12,000 psi with a wet leather backing. Material is .005". Hrolfr , C...

I thought I would try my hand at a Vendal / Viking drinking horn. (Another item availible at Pennsic) It is the same style of pressed foils as I used on my helmet. I'm going to add a strap, I just haven't found the best method. I may make some twisted bar link chain for it. It's about 30" long ...
