In my 25 years of owning shops, I have tried a number of special floor paints. All of them expensive, none of them lasted very long in high traffic areas. So, I now paint my floors with good interior wall paint. I have found that on an old concrete floor, with little or no serious floor prep, It las...

This one: http://www.globaleffects.com/C_pages/Rental/Wardrobe/Armor/Period/CompleteSuit/European/russiansuit_hi.jpg The torso is a copy of a 17th C. Russian armour, that if I remember correctly is in the Kremlin museum. The helmet is a bit fantasy, but loosely based on a style of the same period. W...

I've been welding most of my life, from steel to magnesium and unless you have: no skill as a welder, are doing production welding or just looking for a metal "hot glue" gun, go with a MIG, Miller is in my opinion the best. Nothing more frustrating than a welder that is finicky or unreliab...

Re: polishing tool question

I'm just wondering what is everyones opinion on the most cost efficient deburing and polishing tool/tools. I'm looking at belt sanders, buffing wheels and all sorts of power tools and I'm getting a little overwhelmed. I'm begining to think that making my own belt sander is the right way to go. If t...

Yes, buffing wheels will throw sparks when coated with greaseless compound. You are thinking of "caytex" or "Scotchbrite" wheels. I don't believe this is what is being used. Kreiger is working at my shop. I'll ask him.

It looks like a greaseless compound that comes in a plastic bag tube. You apply it to the wheel, let it dry and then use it. I'm sorry I do not know where it's from or the brand. but I'm pretty sure that’s what it is. BTW getting your finishing, sanding materials and equipment at places like Home ...

Don't. There really isn't any reason to hot work Aluminum. Most common alloy is 6061 T6, T6 refers to hardness, and you want T0 if you can get it. If not, coat you piece with a light coating of soot from an oxy acetylene torch, then with a neutral flame, slowly heat the metal until the soot disappea...

Over the past 28 years, I have made rubber weapons for the SCA and here are some of the things I have learned. I have hesitated in posting a reply, but I have to. You seem more interested in trying to get proof of what you want to believe than being interested in what was a found and historical evidence shows. It's fine if that is what you want to make, but per period examples, your shield is about twice as ...

Interesting. But a buff coat is a single layer of very heavy (.250") brain tanned (Or equivalent) leather. Earlier examples seem to be all multiple layers of thinner leather. As an example: A windbreaker and a rain coat are almost the same, but made in different constructions and materials. The...

It is also believed they may have been covered with l...
