I would try thin (1/16") rawhide. (read rawhide not latigo) Soak it to soften it and wrap it loosely around a wooden blank, sew it through the shield or clinch nail it to the wood and let it dry. Don't make it to tight or when the rawhide shrinks it will twist your shield into a pretzel. In add...

Welcome to the board.

Take brass strip the width you need (Remember both sides and the thickness of the metal your wrapping around.) Take your strip and anneal (soften) it by heating red hot and cooling in cold water. (A mild acid pickle is better if available)

The helmet was a gift for someone and this was the helmet he fell in love with many years ago. I also prefer this design over the real one.
The real one wasn't trimmed in fine silver either.
