Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Well I don't think I'm in the wrong group. My persona is early Roman/Greek. I wouldn't have worn leg armor. So there's really no way to make 'that' look period. So I chose something leather to match my kit and I had the winged horse which was taken directly from a Greek vase to add to my early peri...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Ok that is the SCA official web-page description. The reality is vastly different and to maintain otherwise is engaging in fantasy. If the vast majority of the SCA "are in the wrong group" then perhaps you may be the one who is incorrect. Not everyone has the time resources or ability to ...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

No, I am not. I have made period looking armours that meet SCA minimum for many periods. Just like your new legs, they are designed using modern, SCA design cues, and not period design cues to meet SCA requirements. They are nicely made, but not very historic/ period looking. This thread was started...

Re: Period Etching. Like with Acid

Etched, for the reasons above and because it is a film prop, etching being cheaper and quicker than engraving. Well knowing how often more complex modern techniques are used over a simpler ones, I would not rule out this being laser engraved. As an example, for "Escape from the Smithsonian&quo...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Sigurd, You have just given the most common dodge in the SCA playbook. I didn't ask you to look at the images and show me a "living history" version of these in history. I asked for a "pre 17th C equivalent" now perhaps equivalent is to strong a word, so how about an example of a...

I am not picking on anyone in these photos, I just Googled “SCA Fighter”. But can anyone show me the pre 17th C equivalent of any of these armours? I mean Google any time period and look at the types of armour being used, and compare it with the armour in these pictures and honestly tell me they are...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

I'm confused here. In my kingdom (Atlantia), nonmembers can attend events but must pay a higher fee (the nonmember surcharge). I believe nonmembers can also fight if they're authorized. Does your kingdom have a rule that only currently paid members may be admitted to events? You are correct, there ...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

I'm curious why there can't be a ban on visible plastic. As far as enforcing it that seems easy enough. If you show up on the field with any you are asked to replace it or remove yourself from the field. Read my earlier post. Visible plastic is not the big problem. It is that the overall look of ma...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

(Edit: Marco added his post while I was typing) I am not sure if my point on new rules has been made clear. The "Banning", "covering up", "No plastic" will not solve the problem. The problem is much bigger than that and in a way that I don’t see how any “rule” will solv...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

I think I see the issue. The SCA has no long term officials and as a result, enforcing any rule is difficult, unless that is, it exposes the SCA to legal action. As a result, the group will always settle to the average of it’s populace, and that average is dragged down by the lowest common denominat...

Re: BEGINNER reference pages

I have to completely disagree with the "Get em on the field" mentality. This is why the SCA looks so dumb. This is not a whatever it takes to fight group, it is a historic based group. If you want that, stick to LARP D&D or “B” movies and leave the SCA to the type of people who want to...

Indeed setting up awards (many, like badges to be worn and seen by others) not only for nice kits, but also for improvement of kits, hard and soft. We are -I am sorry say- an award driven organization. Make awards for improvement and for people who help others improve. In 1983 I was instrumental in...

I will agree that a person that has been in for a while should evolve, but to say that the new person should be decked out in late period decore is ridiculous... I tell new fighters NOT to go buy "fancy armor" until they are sure they want to do this. Then after they are sure, which for s...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?

Thomas, While I see your point, I fear this may just force people to add more makeshift coverings for these offending objects, not spending the time improving the things that make SCA armour look so bad in general. These tabards and badly fit T-tunics are there to cover up non-period body armour and...

I’m sorry to disagree. I feel this is basically a good idea, although one that has been done before (Known world handbook I believe), but in this case I think the illustration depicts just what we don't want in the SCA. That is typical SCA goofball armour. I know you can say, it’s just reference and...

You bring up a good point. What if a fighter is given a probationary period in which they are allowed to fight in "Training armour", but after a set time (1 year?) they must pass a historic inspection as well as a safety inspection? Put those Laurels to work!

Yup. I have tried for 30 years to inspire people, as have many, many others, but as you have pointed out without creating and enforcing rules on kit acceptability and outright banning people who don’t adhere to those rules, it isn’t going to change. Something I don’t think could be done even if you ...
